This thread is vicious, I agree, and I am guilty of being part of it.

It's hard not to blame some folks, like Eddie Van Halen, not for his own playing but for all the utter crap his playing inspired.

+1

That Grand Funk solo is sublime. Freaked me out bad the first time I heard it. Todd Rundgren production at it's finest. I wonder what Farner thought when he heard it, as Todd assembled it from scraps.

It always reminded me of the chicken/guitar bit from "Sgt. Pepper" which I always loved...

I think that Adrian Belew must have spent some time with those records.

What the heck was Mick on? He looks like he's out of his gourd. Or, maybe he's just a really intense drummer and I've never noticed it before. :D Either way, that band was never the same after Peter Green left.

Mick Fleetwood was always an intense drummer, but I'm quite sure he was still a prisoner to large mounds of white powder at that time. Out of his gourd is probably a good assessment.

And I still have a crush on Stevie Nicks after all these years.

Rolling Stones, Sympathy for the Devil. Yikes! My ears! What a heinous, out of time, poorly mixed, completely devoid of mojo guitar solo. Bletch!

Another vote for the Edge - how about that soulless, milk toast little ditty he plays in "Rattle & Hum" when Bono yells something like "play some blues."

Close second - Neil Young - "Down By The River" although "Southern Man" as someone else listed, would be a strong contender.

Would also agree with James Gurley - "the father of psychedelic guitar." The one that jumps to my mind is his solo in "Summertime."

That is the immortal Christopher Guest in his role as lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel from "This Is Spinal Tap". If you have not seen it, rent it immediately. The funniest music related movie ever. Trust me: http://imdb.com/title/tt0088258/

I'd rather listen to it than some clean, precise chicken picking any day of the week.

You don't get it. That's The Edge's blues. The real deal. Original. Not some carbon copy of recycled licks stolen from Albert King 40 years ago.

Thank you for some sanity in this thread. Ball and Chain and Southern Man could certainly be in my top ten.

That would be the song Silver and Gold. Have to disagree with you there. Bono's remark was intended to be tongue & cheek. Personally, I like the solo, and I think it fits the song.

Rattle & Hum has some great music, though I do agree that U2 comes off as a bit pretentious. I chalk that up to Paramount trying to make the film into a big budget release, contrary to its original intention.

In any event, that's why I was happy when U2 walked into the 90's and chopped down the Joshua Tree.

Check out Joe perry circa 1974 wanking it out on Train kept a Rollin'

I love Aerosmith but man, starting at 1;45, you really wonder how they ever got so big.

It really is "each to their own" here...because I thought that Aerosmith clip was HOT! One of the first bands I got into when I was like 12 years old. To me, that clip is everything rock music should be. The thing I wonder about is how they morphed into the crap act they are now (and have been for many years).

Thanks for posting it... I'm gonna go watch it again.

Have to go along with the bauld Maggot there.

Is it just me or do some people not get that Nigel is a joke ( and a very profound one at that ) ? Or that the excellent solo in Cover of the Rolling Stone is also a joke ? ' Rock and Rolllllll....'

Here's to ol' Neil and Cinnamon Girl. Sometimes less IS more.
