Wasn't sure how ironic we were being

I was going to suggest You Get What You Deserve - Big Star (fabulous song, but that bum note just before the solo ends is like bad dentistry), but then I saw that Paul Stanley clip and I've been giggling ever since. Terrible guitar, hideous hair product abuse, diabolical tailoring ... it has everything. You've made my day!

You know, I'll take a screwed up solo by an inept gutarist anytime over a wankfest twiddly twiddly solo by a shredder.

The guitar in Bruce's Badlands is painful.

While I agree about Kurt's playing, Soundgarden, STP, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam all had more than their share of tasty solos.

I nominate anything and everything played by C.C. Deville! Special honorable mention goes to Vinnie Vincent for the Sheißefest that was 'Boyz Are Gonna Rock'

"Another Pece of my Heart"- without question. Slow, out of tune, just horrible. In fact every solo by that guy (whoever he is) is just atrocious.

Personally, I always HATED the solo on the studio version of Takin' Care of Business by BTO...it's a stupid sounding solo that is the sonic equivalent of arranging paper clips at your office on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Tasteless crap.....

LOL, I agree. I love U2, but I can barely listen to that album.

...yup. bachman is pure genius when it comes to riffs, but his solos often bite. and don't get me started on his recent attempts to play jazz!

That would be Beasty boy King Adrock who played all the guitar parts on "Licence to ill"

Here's my nomination.

That intro guitar solo makes my toenials curl inwards every time i hear it.

In Chronicles, Vol. 1 Dylan wrote that he once suggested to Albert Grossman that Al Kooper should lead a band fronted by Janis. I don't know about y'all, but I think that would have been schweet.

Here's a quote from the BBHC website about James Gurley:

He never had a guitar lesson in his life. Everything he learned, he learned by ear. He played by using what he describes as the "emotional approach". This approach, unschooled and undisciplined, earned him the title, "Father of Psychedelic Guitar". -and perhaps a spot in the Worst Solo Hallof Fame.
imagine if Janis had a real band!

Some of this late 60s stuff makes me wonder if monitors had been invented yet! And I love Janis.

NOT TRUE!

If you really think that way then explain why Krist Novoselic got away with playing such nice melodic basslines, take for example "Lithium", hear how nicely he plays that Mccartney inspired bassline. And then take Dave Grohl's drumming, he was tighter than jeans that are three sizes too small.

The Reason why Kurt Cobain is heralded as an Icon has nothing to do with album sales, it has to do with honesty. In the early nineties the music scene was largely made up of corporate rock acts who had a whole team behind them to write and arrange songs. Not so with Nirvana they made it big on their own merits.

Can somebody please explain why people still think that Grunge killed the guitar solo? It didn't, the guitar solo was killed only five years later when a band named Korn emerged and delivered Nu-metal onto the scene with detuned guitars, power chords and no solos.

This is a really fun thread!

Especially the You-Tube segments.

Right now for me, it's a tie between

Nigel Tufnel

the Paul Stanley clip

But I'll give him my props for being the star and on-stage personality he is...dig the pick in the mouth pose...practically the whole time, and the technique (and I say this with total rock fan respect) ....right hand, finger-wagging, waving at/inciting the audience... while the left hand hits relentless hammer-ons at high volume ...) Hey, I could do that!

the Big Brother clip...although the Piece of My Heart solo is sorta sloppy and sorta out of tune, it is one of the signature solos of its time.

Like my signature, handwriting, and my guitar playing, sloppy but true.

Funny thing, is I get to occasionally jam with about a dozen of the players who populate this page...and the good news is...

most of you can all play a tastier solo than any of these nominees!

Personally, I'll take grunge over shred, nu-metal etc. any day. I wish shred was dead.
