Do vocal warm-ups before you sing.
Don't strain your voice. If you are not comfortable singing the song... change the key. Let the electronics/PA carry your voice. Don't shout/strain to be heard over the band. Use proper mic technique. Work to sound natural and... Breath. Have fun.

Hey Eddie. Good to hear you're expanding your range of talents.
I try to sing but its probably the only thing I am worse at than guitar! Due to this fact I have no tips but only encouragement. I would love to sing in my own band one day. If I can do it, you can do it!!!

Hi Ed,
Yep...vocal exercises definately. All of Kilts advice +1 in fact. And if it hurts...stop. I've been singing for most of my life and only recently began to actually like what I was hearing of myself ! Maybe the trick is not to think that you have to try to sound like others....which is really difficult isn't it, since we're bombarded with others singing all the time ! The best thing to do is to find the boundaries of your voice and to enjoy walking and working around them. I'm sure that you'll have a ball....just as you seem to with playing guitar ! You know I always like to think that audiences are actually less interested in hearing technique than they are in hearing emotion and sincerity. Don't over practice, don't be over critical of yourself and don't be put off by anybody. Go for it ! Best of luck Chick

Warm up some . I try to sing a little in the car on the way to the gig if time permits.
Drink plenty of liquid during the night. Try to start with something thats easy on you. In the first set use it to warm up good, second and third set, open up and let it rip, last set treat yourself to some more easy stuff.

I took a couple lessons this summer, but haven't put them to work really yet. Just got me an acoustic vocal amp, and wen't looking for some tips again, and found some along with the basic stuff I learned in my few lessons all in one pretty informative page: http://www.wikihow.com/Sing-Properly
