Tele Pickin' On Nashville Star

Did anybody happen to catch the season premiere of Nashville Star tonight (lastnight I should say)?

Normally I avoid shows like this at all costs, but this fellow caught my eye. His name is Tim LaRoche. Aside from the fact that he REALLY needed a haircut and a new cowboy hat, this guy impressed me!!! His intro and solo were great! Some of the best chickin' pickin' i've seen in a long time.

No kidding, he covered his own version of "Devil went Down To Georgeia", played it on his tele. Very impressive for that kind of a show. Most of the time all we see are wannabe country/pop singers that just butcher classic songs by doing their own renditions of them.

The stupid thing is, the judges thought he was the first one that should leave the show. Of course, the first one to go is the only REAL talent. They don't want musicians, they want knockoff karaoke wannabes. Then after they get their "winning contestant", the guy/girl gets a record deal and continues to spit out songs that have no meaning, no soul, and NO GOOD GUITAR PLAYING!!

Tim: You were #1 in my books, totally did not expect to see talent like that on a reality TV show, especially one hosted by "Cowboy Troy". Don't give up dude, I look forward to the day when I hear your awesome pickin' on the radio. They said your voice wasn't the greatest, but man i'd rather listen and watch you perform than any of those other guys on the show tonight! But seriously, you need a haircut and a new hat, LOL.

You know, I was thinking, the judges (if that's what you want to call them) kind of trashed the girl too. Just between us buddies here, I think she was the only girl who had any real talent too. It may just be that their "Bar Band" upbringing is the thing that did them in. It WAS obivous that they both had it. I think the judges kind of forgot where they came from. Except for that stupid Anastasia Brown. What an idiot! Gorgeous idoit, but still.....where the heck did she come from anyway, a bit too pompous in my opinion.

I have to take issue with you here.

His choice of song probably did him in. There is no way to showcase your vocals on The Devil Went Down to Georgia, and simply playing the fiddle riff isn't impressive enough to come across as a virtuoso picker. His singing was off-pitch in places, and although well done, the guitar playing was simply too predictable.

Okay, fair enough.
But we only got to see him perform once. And thanks to those judges that's all we'll probably get to see of him. You're right, his choice of song didn't showcase his vocal ability very well. Even though the pickin' was predictable, it was tasteful. I thought it was pretty darn cool actually. It's not fair to say that a solo like that sounds cool on a fiddle but not on a guitar. Yes he was off pitch a bit, but playing lead guitar like that and singing well at the same time takes a lot of talent.

It just seems like such a shame to me that a great picker like that is passed over for those other wannabe karaoke knockoffs. I'll tell you what'll happen. This show will declare a winner that will go forth and continue to spit out songs with no meaning, useless lyrics and boring storylines with absolutely NO GUITAR PICKIN'!

It's such a shame that this guy didn't have a better voice. We could have had another Brad Paisley on our hands. Not to say he's on par with Brad, just sayin' it'd have been nice to hear a little more tele pickin' on the radio these days and a little less "pop/country".

I haven´t seen the show but the name "Nashville Star" says it all... I haven´t heard the others but I think he was great! Would be nice to hear him to some slow country ballads in 3/4 time....

That Angela Hacker gal whose brother is also in it has pro-vocal chops. She should just drop off the show and go on into the studio. She doesn't belong on this show. It isn't fair to the other contestants.

LOL, to each his own I guess. I would never wear something like that, but he seems to have an "I don't care how I look attitude". But I think that comes from the fact that he's a bit of a genuine redneck. He doesn't dress like that for attention. That's just the way he dresses. I hope so. Like I said before, I'd rather listen to him on the radio that any of these karoake knockoffs singing useless love songs. This guy can really pick, it would be a nice change of pace for country radio, even if his singing voice isn't real excellent. Look at Johnny cash, he never sang like a reality show winner but he went a long way. Why can't we appreciate uniqueness like we used to anymore?

A couple of remarks:

1. Anastasia Brown is hot, but unbearable.
2. Laroche blew me away for that sort of show. I remember telling my wife that he would be the first to go - wrong format for his talent - but that he was the only guy I'd pay to watch in the "real world"
3. Angela Hacker will win it all if those people have a grain of intelligence.
4. Next week, Miranda Lambert is singing. Which is funny since she was voted off very early when she tried out for the show

5. Laroche's remark was darn funny when he said that most people want to go out and make a fortune and then live a little. The guy has no insurance, and lives in a nasty trailer, and looked at the camera and said "I don't just think that life is that expensive". Damn funny.
6. The blonde who's left in the show and is somewhat attractive is the worst singer I have heard in a long time.
7. The format sucked because they were hell-bent on sending home one guy and one gal. That means that some of the girls who are left were worse than the guy who went home. Stupid format.
8. A. Brown tries to hard to be the mean judge. Her remark to Ms. Hacker that "you're underdressed to go to walmart" was out of line imho. The point is well taken, but the way in which she made it, on TV, is something she should be ashamed of.

I agree. I don't care much for judges on reality TV shows of any kind. They think their opinions are facts, but they're just opinions. I don't really think its fair for them to decide what the public wants to listen to. Let's let the public do the deciding.

Are people so desperate for new artists that they need to search accross America for the best of the best of the best to be their newest pop idol? Why don't people want individuality anymore? Brad Paisley isn unique because of his incredible guitar and song writing skills, not because he can sing like Clay Aiken. Truth be known, i'll bet that half of all the artists on country radio would NOT win a reality show like American Idol or Nashville Star if they weren't already famous. Imagine if all that's what we had to listen to, just reality TV show winners. How boring would that be.

mojocasterman: +1 for the comments on LaRoche. I respect him a lot, not just because he's a guitarman. But because he seems to be a working man. Life's not all about him and his fame. He has a wife and a child that he knows he has to support. Living in a trailer like that doesn't say to me that he's gonna get famous at all costs. I'd be willing to bet that being on Nashville Star was a milestone for him in a music career. He didn't succeed so me may just return to his life with that experience under his belt. And I'll bet he'll do it with a smile on his face. He seems to be happy with his life. Gotta respect a guy like that.

LaRoche for sure is the only guy I'd pay money to watch perform in real life. I'd rather sit in a bar and watch him have a good time entertaining a small crowd, than watch some pop/country idol sit on a stage in a stadium and just bask in the spotlight of thousands of screeming (stupid) fans.

Hey! ... I caught this show by accident, and thought it was a LOT better than American Idol...way less over-produced.

No doubt, the long haired boy was great on the Tele...I was impressed...however, this show is about singing, not guitar pickin'...and I agree, that this was a really bad chpice for a vocal competition.

As well, the brother/sister competitors are loaded with talent. Unfortunately..now, it looks like I'll have to keep tuning in to see who wins .. LOL
