Well, I did see Queen jam a very long time ago when they had a bad reception just after Seven Seas came out - we're talking 1973 or so here - and they weren't in any way famous at that time. I'm told by my daughter who was there that at the Reading festival in the UK a couple of years ago when someone called 50 Cent was booed off the stage that Green Day jammed away for an hour or so to fill in time - not what you'd expect I guess.

For me, the Allman Bros. will be the standard. The Grateful Dead were excellent. Phish are very fine musicians, but the GD have better songs, I think.

+1 on Blueground Undergrass

Rev. Jeff and Johnny Mosier are great guys!

Mark Van Allen is a great pedal steel player.

I did some work for them several years ago.

I just remembered, Umphrey's McGee. There music is very diverse, therefore they can be quite interesting. They are a fine group of musicians who should have a good future ahead.

No Particular Order:

Allman brothers
Little Feat
Widespread Panic
Led Zep
Hot tuna
Golden Smog
Jayhawks

I know the last three aren't always generally thought of as jam bands, but they do jam and extend songs into that realm..

Not really into the jam band scene, but I love it when the following bands "stretch out" a bit...

The Black Crowes
Primus
Led Zeppelin

I love bands the jam/improvise. Let it all hang out and hope it works. If a band is playing it safe, chances are pretty good I'll be bored. The problem is, most of the more popular jam bands just don't do it for me in the songwriting dept.. Phish had some great songs early on, but most made me say "Please stop singing and just play".

My list:

Grateful Dead

Medeski, Martin, and Wood (although they tend to noodle too much these days)

Club d'Elf

How 'bout The Who? Live at Leeds is some serious jamming.

A 20 minute song can be a great thing if it stays interesting and takes you on a journey. Otherwise, it can be a tedious nightmare.

What impresses me about the Black Crowes' jamming is that it's highly musical. It never sounds hippie-dippy to me, it always sounds cohesive and conversational, but with focus, power and clarity. And while Marc Ford, who recently departed the band (again) has gotten and deserves a lot of credit, it's Rich who directs the whole thing. I've seen these guys many times and stood in front and studied the band dynamic closely. Rich is the musical leader, everyone, even Chris takes their cues from him. Which absolutely makes sense, because the Black Crowes' music is ultimately his music, as he is the one writing it. And he is a very cool guy, not some "bully" or whatever someone inaccurately stated here. He is very friendly, personable and approachable. He is a very strong player and he is rock solid onstage. He moves very little and rarely smiles, but when he does is when things are going really well. Last time I saw them in San Antonio on 10/25/06, he was smiling from ear to ear at the end of the show, waving to the audience and he gave new guitarist Paul Stacey a big hug onstage at the end. The Black Crowes are the best Rock 'n Roll band going in America these days, as far as I am concerned. A top-notch, class act where the music definitely comes first. These days, that's really rare.

I dig the Screaming Cheetah Wheelies, they probably aren't noted for jamband, but if you happen to have their double live cd you're aware of it.I think they're defunct now.

For some of you jamband fans some sad news. Anyone here familiar with Acoustic Syndicate, or Bad Daddy Bluegrass Band? the Lead singer/guitarist for the band Steve McMurray lost his wife in a single car crash this week. They are local boys, but have toured around the states, played with several bignames (Dirty Dozen Brass Band) and I think they played the first Bonnaroo. Send some prayers and thoughts up please...
