The wife and I are taking a trip to Las Vegas next week. I haven't been out there in about 12 years so I need some advice on hotels and anything else you guys might think of. We're looking to stay somewhere on the strip.

Just stayed at the Wynn... it is fabulous. Historically, was always a Caesars guy, kinda switched to the Bellagio in the last couple of years. One thought, it has been my experience that if you stay in the hotel that has the main show you want to see you tend to get better seats. Lots of great choices for hotels and lots of specials... I think I've stayed in nearly all of the major hotels if not all of them. Favorite place to eat is the Star Canyon at the Venetian.... The Wynn is the newest and had the most 'wow' factor for the spousal unit...

The Flamingo

We've been to all of the "big" ones, but keep finding ourselves going back to the Flamingo - just something about the character and history of the place that keeps us coming back - the casino there is still my favorite - small enough to feel friendly, large enough to keep your interest ! Have always been treated like royalty by the staff there - the entire staff seems to genuinely care about your stay there. Reminds me what Vegas was all about before the multi-gazillion dollar hotels started sprouting on the strip.

Card readers, cheap callgirls, $2 blackjack tables, whackings, maitre d's with great discretion, $2.99 primerib buffets?

Those were the days!

Stay at the Venetian or Wynn for the best service, and don't forget to visit Cowtown Guitars on Maryland Parkway!

In case you are curious about walking and looking, the younger, hipper places: The Palms, Hard Rock, Mandalay Bay, to a lesser extent Bellagio. (The Palms and Hard Rock are off the strip in opposite directions).

I have not been in the Wynn yet, but my colleague next door has a daughter from here in Ga that is a choreographer in NYC, and she is taking Spamalot to the Wynn very soon, so I expect to check it out before long.

Personally, I'll also be visiting The Palms, Hard Rock, Mandalay Bay, to a lesser extent Bellagio.

You should definitely see Excalibur because it is the hokiest dogpile to be seen in Vegas. It is across from The Tropicana, which is still prolly the raunchiest bachelor party spot in Vegas.

There are many, many good restaurants in Vegas now. Vegas is not about cheap rooms, cheap eats, and cheap shows as it was in the old days. I don't care for buffets anyway, and I certainly do not want something like a steak, that should be freshly prepared and cooked to order, out from under a heatlamp. Nine at The Palms was a good steakhouse, and is a trendy spot. Emeril's is there now as well. For the most part, I will dine off the strip to avoid the tourist clutter. Roy's, which has a restaurant in Atlanta as well, is there and was good.

+1 on Cowtown Guitars, it's worth a cab ride.

Another cool thing to do if you are bored of the tables is visit one of the gun ranges where you can fire fully automatic weapons. I rented a WWII vintage German MP-40 and shot up a poster of Osama Bin Laden. I couldn't wipe the grin off my face for the rest of the night.

Yes Sir !!!! It wasn't too long ago that a well placed twenty would get you seats to a "sold out" show or a good table in any restaurant ! Now, a twenty won't even buy you one of those "blue" Martini's ! And the $2.99 Prime Rib Buffet was a real bargain - until you added in what you lost in their casino and Prime Rib suddenly cost you about $675.00 a serving And the "whackings" - ohhhhhhhhh! how I miss those ! Always seemed to me that the crowds then were better behaved knowing that if they acted up inside the casino, "Louie No-Neck" would have a little "chat" with 'em outside of the casino. And the most peculiar thing about Vegas? For a place where prostitution isn't legal, they sure have a lot of prostitutes ! Go figure !

Bellagio, Wynn, Paris, the Venetian...all great places.

+1 on staying at a place that has a show you want to see for better prices.

Also on shows...check out the Station Casinos (Palace Station, Sunset Station, Boulder Station, etc). My wife and I saw Tony Orlando last spring. Top notch show for a good price (compared to the strip shows) and not nearly the traffic.

And a big +1 on Cowtown Guitars.
