When I need to do arrangements in recording projects, sometimes I pull out that album for inspiration. Brian was indeed a genius. How a human mind could HEAR all those parts before they were played still humbles me.
And, it is a great album! What is the DVD all about?

People will most definitely come." |

I love that album. I keep "Let's Go Away For A While" in my running playlist. When I'm overheated, that brings me right back.

I just heard it for the first time a few weeks ago. Picked up the remastered version at the Tower closeout - includes the original mono version remastered and a 1997 stereo remix.
Pretty amazing record there's some strikingly beautiful music on there Not at all what i expeced, having previously only heard the Beach Boys singles on oldies radio It may be blasphemy but I find myself liking the stereo remix better than the original mono |

I've heard it said that there are two types of Beach Boys fans: Those that like the fun in the sun teen anthems and those that mainly, or only, like Pet Sounds.
Myself, I prefer the exuberant fun of their early stuff (I signed on as a fan at seven years old with 'Endless Summer'). When I bought Pet Sounds in the mid '80s it threw me. Over the years I've grown to love the album for the masterpiece that it is but I don't think it's a flawless album and - believe it or not - I think Mike Love just may have had a smidgen of a point with his negative reaction to Brian's 'Ego Music'. Where the album really shines are with its unabashed looking-for-another-hit-single moments (God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B). One of the instrumentals (Let's Go Away For Awhile) is superb, the other (Pet Sounds title track) not so much. I've heard the Stereo remix and agree that it virtually recreates the album as a totally new listening experience. With the mono, there's just so much going on, it takes years to assimilate - probably the point. In my opinion the best sounding (if not the best) Beach Boys record is the superb 'Sunflower' - That one's a sheer audiophile delight.

The chord progressions in "God Only Knows" are simply incredible. I'm primarily a jazz and blues player but I know outstanding songwriting when I hear it and the writing on that album was truly ingenious.

I bought the CD/DVD two or three months ago. I like the 5.1 mix alright. There was so much ping-ponging and track compositing going on, they didn't have much to work with, but they gave it the old college try. I haven't compared the new stereo mix to the original mono. Whatever form it's in, I love the album. I can't say the same thing about "Smile." I have trouble listening to it even part of the way through.
