the iPhone at macworld

well.... it's here... the ULTIMATE hand held computing device.... apple released the iPhone... and it is AWESOME....

Honestly... they're about to change the world.... again....

it's literally about as wide as an ipod, but about 1 1/2 times long.... 11 mm thin... there's 1 button... they've applied for over 200 patents for the technology they've developed for this phone... It is NOT running a clumsy little operating system... it IS running OS X!!!!!! each application has a different interface, like you'd expect with a regular computer.... it is running Safari (apples web browser)... it is NOT a crappy web surfing version... it IS Safari... the phone allows you to view FULL webpages... ANYWHERE!!!!... it is AWESOME.... the touch screen that they developed for this is amazing.. the entire product is... well... you'll all see...

it's priced at 499.00..... and since the iPhone is basically a laptop in a phone... since it's running OS X, it's got ALL The applications that come on OS X... Mail, iPhoto, iTunes, iCal.... everything.... bye bye Blackberry.... ;)

it's awesome..

the iPhone is very cool but I was hoping for new iPods with larger screens for vids. I suspect the iPhone is a preview of the next generation iPod form with the larger screen.

The iPhone is very cool, but I suspect the secret revolution revolves around the Apple TV. This has the possibility of drastically changing the way people get their TV and movies.

The Era Of True Digital Convergence Has Arrived

Once Apple outfits the iPhone with a bigger flash drive or even a hard drive it will fully replace the current iPods. Then they could offer an iPhone nano (and even an iPhone Shuffle -- no screen and it makes random calls)! And one more thing...today, Apple changed it's name officially from Apple Computer Inc. to Apple Inc.. Yes, the era of digital convergence has truly arrived today, 1.9.07. Five years from now, in 2012, computers as we know them will be extinct, replaced by devices that run virtual versions of multi OS computers along with all of the other things the Mac, PC, iPhone and the forthcoming AppleTV do and things we can't even imagine in the dawn of this new era!

Yada, yada, yada... Where are the flying cars they promised us we'd have now back in the '50s?

yes we are.... amazing isn't it?

A while back, we invested in an intel mac mini... I also purchased a device called "eyeTV"... this device allows my computer to act as a regular tv and HDtv.... it's great.... the MacMini controls all of our peripherals..... it's great....

I love our generation.... till I turn on the TV... then I'm sadly reminded that the world doesn't revolve around Mac's and Tele's... :(

The AppleTV looks sweet. It seems to be reasonably priced too. From the looks of it, it creates a wireless connection from your computer to your TV, so you can watch all those movies you downloaded onto iTunes, and anything else you have. Awesome! Apple is always the first in line for innovation. I can't wait to see how Microsoft "invents" the same thing in a year or so

Agreed! But I think it's a "stripped down" version of OS X.

The iPhone doesn't use 3G, does it? So still GPRS - how is that a big improvement on the Qtek I use, apart from it is lighter? I will admit to a lot of ignorance on the telecomms side of the IT industry! It is good looking though.

The AppleTV does look a good way to go.

I'm not so sure of that. I spoke to an apple rep yesterday, and he said that .... it's OS X... He wasn't really allowed to discuss the hardware specs of it (it's still a pretty big secret), but the thing's got a ton of ram.. so... apparently... It's really running OS X, and not a stripped down version... maybe the video drivers are a little bit different.... but.... from what I gather, by it's performance and ease of use..... it's really OS X... It's really insane what that little phone can do.....

maybe it is a stripped down version, but both the rep and Steve Jobs were both pretty adamant in saying that it wasn't.....

The company I work for is developing several applications/products in conjunction with Apple for the iTV rollout...some of the stuff you see in the next 5 years will blow your mind

Hopefully it isn't, but if it is we can be pretty sure they will call it streamlined.

What's the point of having the full OS X on the iPhone? Is anyone going to use the iPhone to write lenghthy documents, edit photos, cut video?

It's unnecessary and seems like it would add a lot to the hardware requirements for no purpose.

The concern I have with the iPod is the lack of tactile response on the device. No matter what you want to do, you have to use the touch screen and that requires visual attention. There's no way you'll be able to dial that phone without looking directly at the screen.

Macosrumors.com ran a few articles about a "streamlined" version to be used in embedded devices, and named the iPhone specifically. Maybe I'm being cynical, but some how I doubt that an OS that needs half a gig of RAM and a 1 GHz processor to run without occasional hiccups can be run on the iphone.

I'm kind of concerned about the fact that it only has one button, but I bet the voice dial feature works nearly flawlessly anyway. Using it for texting seems kind of arduous, though. Maybe next they'll be selling full-size keyboards like they do for Palms :)

My only complaint about embedded OSes is that they're so specialized that the rate of abandonment only runs a couple of generations deep. They're expensive as all get out to develop for and support so after a year or so, good luck getting upgrades. Apple's in a position to change all of that, and if they find a way to make firmware upgrades easy and accessible (they're achiveing more success doing this for iPod, updating firmware through iTunes) then they'll get my business.

If you have a mac and you've ever upgraded the firmware you know how easy it is... we solved that quite awhile back. As to marketing language, it is my understanding that the OS is the OS. It is OS X. It is running Safari and it runs dashboard widgets and other apps etc...

The funniest question I've had so far is does the headphone jack output video.. folks already want to run their keynote slides on a projector and not carry a notebook... the third party opportunities here are going to be geometrically greater than they were with the ipod.

Yeah...just what you want when you're running the AV at a large meeting. Every speaker will come with their own iPhone and want to plug it into the projector two minutes before their talk.

On another front, Cisco has already sued Apple over the name. It seems that Cisco trademarked iPhone in 2000 and has been in negotiations with Apple to let Apple use its name. They have not yet come to an agreement but Apple decided to go ahead and use the name anyway.

I go to lots of meetings now where folks plug their ipods into projectors and speakers and use them as their presenting tools... it works just fine and is a lot less to carry.

As to the suit.... it is all about getting paid. I 'm sure they'll work it out... regular people worry about being sued, I think for large business it is just part of the d
