Gibson need to realize that "new" models (read: LP's and SG's screwed with to varying degrees) will not get people buying. Now myself, I would do something crazy, like, make the old stuff better and lower the price. But then what do I know? I play a Strat.

I used to go into my buddy's record store and complain the he'd mis-file Kenny G in jazz, to which he said "I'll put it wherever it'll sell!"
Have you seen the BFG Les Paul's? HORROR!! But the local shop says they've sold everyone they were sent. Apparently, somebody likes this stuff... |

Fender this year introduced the made in Mexico Classics at $799 retail, they raised the price of the MIM Jimmie Vaughan strat and the MIM Muddy Waters Tele to $650 retail. The MIA Hwy 1 Fenders go for $749 and the American series go for $949. Maybe Gibsons used to be overpriced, but Gibson recently lowered the prices on their low cost models while Fender has raised their prices. |

He's right...
[quote=tele12] You can get Faded Flying V's or SG's also made in the USA for $579.
Those are good guitars for the money... especially the V... and Fender further scrambles up the product line divisions by reformatting the Hwy 1s and raising std tele prices while downgrading the PUPs |

A set neck Made In USA Les Paul model for under a grand? Nah, it'll never sell.
Metal? Nah, there's no market for metal. I like it. And I'll bet Gibson cries all the way to the bank. |

It's funny, 'cause I am a fan of so-called traditional guitars (Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, SGs, etc.), and when they were introduced they were seen as being ridiculous by a lot of people. The guitar in this thread is nothing more than a "Goth" Les Paul. Ooooo, HOW radical!!! Gimme a break! I bet it's well made and plays and sounds great, just like the John 5 Tele. I have a few "odd balls" in my collection (My Ampeg Dan Armstrong Plexi guitars, for example) and one that more conservative folks would surely cringe at, a white BC Rich Warlock! Guess what?! It's a great open E slide guitar, and sounds really great for Blues. Dave W is right, it'll sell like hotcakes!

I Like it! I doubt I'd ever own one, but it looks mean n nasty ta me. Thank god Gibson has the moxy to do something other than heritage sunburst or butterscotch or the run of the mill seen one ya seen em all colors n cuts. You hafta dare to be different! Hurray for Gibson as they deliver a variety of choices for a variety of tastes.
Quit whining and go back to your boring black guard! PK

Fender has their weird freakish guitars too! It's not for the average player, but I'm sure they'll still sell well - at least to the market that they're intended for. Anytime Gibson comes up in nearly any forum, they're bashed for high prices. For what you get, they're easily worth the price. I've owned as many guitars as the next guy, but without my Telecasters and three Gibsons (I'll be owning more of both Teles and Gibsons as soon as budget allows too!), I'd be a very unhappy guitar player. It really irks me to hear folks bash Gibson or say that Epiphones are of equal quality... especially after all of the fair shakes (5 or 6 owned, then sold) I've given Epiphone over the last decade or so. Take your time saving up a few bucks, buy a Gibson, and don't be so bitter about the price tag! I haven't regretted spending the money after three times now, and am looking for more. |

I think it's a shame for Gibson to have sunk this low...not just for their bastardization of the Les Paul, but for their acoustics, and their trade policy with their dealers.

we should all remember that Fender plays the same game. maybe not at the price level that Gibson does, but in some cases....
C'mon, a pro jr for 800+? The Squier Obey Series and neither comapny does anything to promote the development of new body styles, features, etc (except Gibson's new Digital LP which is about 15 years ahead of any of our gear). So, although I'm a dyed in the wool fender fan, I just wanted to play devil's advocate.

I'm not down with the inlays on the tribal, but the rest doesn't bother me. It wouldn't be my first choice, but I don't see it as a shark-jump.
That other thing (the BFG?), the unfinished one with no truss rod cover--that thing is hideous. |
