Vulture's Feast

Took a trip to the old car junkyard today. Pickin' at the bones of the dead.

--

Every single Telecaster I own has a chrome Cadillac wing from a car of my birthyear embedded into the body of the guitar.

Starting an Esquire Partscaster build and was at the junkyard for a car part anyways, so I started hunting for my chrome wings...

Got lucky, the ONLY car that had any unstripped chrome was a Cadillac Coupe De Ville - in my year.

Got enough little wings for two more guitars, and I've even got a big wing for one of my amp builds (I'll probably put it on my Twin/Bandmaster head).

--

THREAD QUESTION:
ANYWAYS, I noticed a lot of random un-car stuff inside a lot of cars and trunks...

WHAT KINDA STORIES OR WEIRD GOODIES HAVE YOU FOUND FROM A JUNKYARD VISIT (be it a car graveyard or a guitarpawn/parts shop)?

Found a gun with the numbers filed off in the spare tire compartment in the trunk of an old Oldsmobile 88. We were getting the tire and a jack for a Buick LeSabre (they were practically the same car) and we ran across the gun. No telling what the story was. Guns weren't uncommon in Alaska, but a handgun with the numbers filed off hidden in a car in a junkyard seemed a little strange. We mentioned it to the guy running the junkyard and his only response was, "$25". We didn't take it.

I woulda, then I woulda brought it to the police... if they had no luck with it, it woulda been cool to keep!

My dad recently found a gun with the numbers filed off in a plot of recent construction... weird.

I sent my old pickup truck to the boneyard with a real nice socket wrench set. I was real disappointed when I realized I lost it. Didn't know it for a long time either. I was looking through the stuff I pulled out of the truck (in a hurry) and my socket wrench set wasn't there.

I found a dead cat in the trunk of a 98 Mustang I was removing the trunk lid and spoiler from. Needless to say it wasn't a pleasant surprise.

One of the guitarists in my nephew's band plays a late 50s Les Paul TV model (the double cutaway, flat top, 2xP-90) guitar that a friend of his found in the trunk of a car in a junkyard...

I never seem to find cool stuff like that!

Cheers, Tim

Hey JC - I was wondering where that little chrome wing came from. Now I know. Hmmmmm..... I'm thinking of an emblem off of a 66 GTO. The chrome bumper would be a little awkward; not to mention the added weight.

The only thing I've ever found in a junkyard was junk. So, I've never experienced the "bait and switch" scam with the 50's Les Paul. Thats' just false advertising. Lucky dog!

LOL I didn't quite know what to expect either. I like the idea though, and have half a mind (I could probably stop that sentence right there and be just fine) to rip JC's idea and start taking 1973 Karmann Ghia logos for my guitars.

I sent a car to the boneyard that had a french fry stuck between the driver's seat and the handbrake. It had been there for at least 5 years.

Pawn shop finds:

MIJ Jerry Donahue, $200 (last day of the year, store owner didn't want to inventory it)

MIJ 69 Thinline reissue, $200

Mutron Phase III (?), $20

Junkyard finds:

69 GTO minus engine and tranny, $100. Made money on that one.

Complete turbo set up of of a 79 (?) Turbo Monte Carlo. It's going on my 80 Sunbird V6.

Wish I could find:

A nice 2-door Subaru Impreza not wrecked minus engine and tranny.

A '66 GTO emblem would look so cool!

The plain GTO text in chrome is very slick and would look great on any guitar.

There was so many GTO emblems I saw when I was down there in the pickin' fields.

The emblem that just says "Karmann" with the K underlining the rest of the text? That'd be pretty cool looking.

Never made my way to the Imports section to check for you :(

.

e-merlin and Tim, those are some pretty insane finds!!

1239, I know exactly what you're talking about... some of these french fries I find in my car are petrified trees harder than concrete. At least 5 years old... I saw so many old fries under gutted seats that your story made me laugh my ass off!

I haven't been to a junkyard in years. I love picking through old stuff. I'll have to take a trip to a junkyard when things thaw out.

I do have a slightly related story...

A friend and I were driving back to Tucson from Winfield, KS where we attended the festival there. We were driving through Texas and needed gas, so we turned off in Shamrock, TX. It seemed like a good sign since we played Irish music. I noticed two or three junkyards in town and they all seemed to specialize in EDSELS. One might make sense, but two or three? It was a foggy day and we pulled into an older gas station. The garage had big wooden doors and they were only opened a little ways. We couldn't see in. An old geezer in overalls came out of the garage. He strolled up to the car and with a strange grin said: "We ain't got no gas here." We said, "OK" and hightailed it out of there. I was waiting for the Twilight Zone theme to start. My friend and I were convinced that they were fixin' some kind of alien spacecraft in that garage. The vibes were way weird.

The next gas station seemed normal enough, but we got back on the Interstate as fast as we could.

Still I'd like to have a '58 Edsel Ranger with the push buttons for the automatic tranny in the middle of the steering wheel. Or maybe some nameplates for an amp or speaker cab...

OK so I just spent ten minutes working out how on earth you put a wing from a car onto a guitar.

Must be getting old - you guys don't mean what we in the UK call a wing do you . . . . you call a wing a fender don't you, and this means the Cadillac wing logo. Duh, me stupid!

I had an old Volvo that I spilled shrimp fried rice in, between the handbrake and the seat. Stayed there several years, never could get it all out. When I sold it, the guy just looked at the rice and shook his head...didn't say a word.
