Perhaps it will be a creative distraction for Sir Paul from his divorce woes to team up with his "ex." I, for one, will be eager to hear it. For my .02, the John/Paul harmonies are in a class by themselves.

That would be nice, especially if, this time, it can be done without Jeff Lynne's influence.

The Fab Four abandoned Now And Then during their prime. McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr tried to resurrect the track when they put together their Beatles Anthology albums ten years ago, but guitarist Harrison claimed it was not good enough.
Hmmm... I'd tend to trust George's instinct.

With John and George dead, Paul shouldn't mess with it. Without input from the rest of the band, it's rather pointless IMO.

Meh, George could be a sourpuss sometimes. I heard him rag on "Real Love" after it had been released on Anthology 2. Personally, I think Real Love was an excellent tune, and I'm glad it was released.

He also ripped U2 for their ZooTV/PopMart era...all the spectacle, etc. Hmmm, I'd venture a guess that in retrospect, Sgt. Peppers/Magical Mystery Tour were the Achtung Baby/Zooropa/Pop of their day.

I always enjoyed his playing with the Beatles, and I rank Something, Here Comes The Sun, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps (acoustic version) as among their finest collective works. But I always categorize him as the grumpy Beatle, one whose opinion on music I place firmly behind John and Paul.

Grumpy, yes. Musical judgement, pretty damn much better than Macca's, who's put out some amazingly crappy and stupid tunes over the years...

IMHO... YMMV...

All four have rather spotty solo careers with some serious lapses in judgement. It just shows that the whole was far greater than the sum of its parts.

No point in judging it til we hear it. Could be decent.

Sad, but true IMO. I can't imagine any of them rising above obscurity without the band. And I do like some of the solo records from John, Paul, and George. I just think it would have gone un-noticed if they hadn't been Beatles.

Oh agreed, solo wise, Paul has produced some real crap. But I'm talking about when it comes down to Beatles collaborations. They all managed to elevate each others levels as a group...case in point:

John represented a tougher edge to the band, and kept Paul from getting too sappy.

Paul represented the group's pop sensibility, and kept John from getting too obscure.

George represented a mystical aspect of the Beatles with his religious and spiritual tendencies. And he contributed one of the great guitar tones in RnR history.

Ringo....well.....he kept good time as a drummer, and represented a humerous aspect of the band

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you.....The Frog Chorus!

I rest my case!

As far as I'm concerned, they all four dropped it soon after they recorded it, presumably as not being good enough. They then did the same at the Anthology stage, when there were three of them, 10 years ago.

At this point, Macca should see that it stays where it belongs. It wasn't good enough before on two occasions, so why now? Or, would sir be looking for some publicity?

...checks and balances...

...the four together offered said "checks and balances",but the "spottiness"(as mentioned in an earlier post) of the solo careers would be influenced, and toughened,by the opinions of the other three...obviously,the ego battles between John and Paul were played out for all to see,but George (my admitted fave),with his Bagladesh experience, used his Beatle name to make an attempt to truly help the worlds ills as best he could...George had a personal sense of harmony, flavored by the cadences of the Indian classical music he so loved, and he used it to create a personal sound...some brilliant, some good, but hardly ever trash...the Beatle braintrust was extremely hard on George (in the Anthology,Paul made mention of the peer pressure of being in the Beatles),because his low key personality was, many times, obscured by the blinding personalities of John and Paul...I'm dubious of any "new' Beatle song...it's admittedly another attempt to wring as much $$$ out of the Beatle brand as can be had...Sir Macca was a great Beatle, and he still plays hard, and he gives those who never experienced the Beatles first hand the opportunity to do that, but my heart just can't connect to it...to some in my generation, there was no feeling of expectation quite like tearing the cellophane off of a new Beatle record and placing the needle on the vinyl, and hearing the music for the 1st time!!!...I doubt I'd get that same feeling now for said "NEW" Beatle record...

All very good points bluetele, but now flip that around....

When the Anthologies came out, I was 14-15 yrs old. My only real awareness or consideration of the Beatles was engrained within the choruses of She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand. Free As A Bird comes out and BOOM!!! I'm mesmerised by this cool music video, the great lead guitar lines. Then Real Love comes out later...an even better music video, and an ever better song, jaysus, they nailed it again!! With those two new songs, my interest was piqued. A year later, I owned every album in the Beatles catalog and my appreciation for the band had grown by leaps and bounds.

I guess my point is, there will always be commercial considerations for the release of any new single by the Beatles, but for those of us who are a bit younger and were not able to experience the Beatles the first time around, new material can provide a method to introducing this music to a new generation. I don't ever expect such material to set off a new wave of Beatlemania, but for someone like me who was six months old when John Lennon was shot, it's a pretty cool thing to experience.

...noted zooropamofo!!!...

...yeah,they certainly piqued my interest with "Free As a Bird" and "Real Love" as well, but this new song will be more of a stretch without George...it's a total drag when the icons of your youth pass...I "saw" them at Candlestick Park(their last live performance),as I certainly couldn't "hear" them thru the din of those wacky girls...I'm glad you went out and got all the recordings,as it's wonderful music...my tastes changed as I grew older, but this one found solice in going back to those old records,as they brought back fond mem'ries...I played in Ottawa some time ago,and I have some definate mem'ries of that time as well...I forgot the name of the club, but it was a good, down and dirty blues venue...I played there with Elvin Bishop, probably 16 years ago,or so...

I can definitely relate to what you say...I'm a huge U2 fan, and I'm sure I'll feel the same way someday when one of them passes on.

Hmmm, Ottawa 16 yrs ago? Barrymore's? If you're ever coming back, let me know!
