Wierd Stuff!!!

Apart from "normal" music that most people listen to, I like what most people would refer to as the "whacky stuff" aswell!

I would like to discover more, so if anyone has any out there that may be of interest?

I'll give you an idea of what I mean;

Mr Bungle
Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra
Secret Chiefs 3
Estratosphere
The Frogs
Wesley Willis
John Zorn/Naked City
Frank Zappa

There are more, I just can't think of them...., does anyone have any more???

Check out Yma Sumac. She is/was a strange vocal performer from the 50's and 60's. She considered in the Exotica genre. Her recording are really fun. This is a record I have:

I think I have a track of hers? A series of CD's called "Welcome to the Ultra Lounge" and "Welcome back to the Ultra Lounge" has one of her songs on it I think?
Thanks! I will try and track down some of her stuff!

+1 on Wesley Willis and Beefheart.

And then there is Unknown Hinson, a really weird character but a fantastic picker.

Bob Log III, Stan Ridgway (formerly of Wall of Voodoo), Hasil Adkins, Johnny Dowd, Jack Oblivion and the Tearjerkers, Mr. Quintron.

Bob Log is an insane slide player that wears an Elvis suits and a motorcycle helmet with a telephone - microphone installed into the shield. He plays a bass drum too. Wild crazy slide blues. His latest record is called Boob Scotch.

Stan Ridgway was the lead man in WOV. His solo records are twangy quirky snippets of pop surrealism.

Hasil Adkins is another one-man-band like Bob Log, only more on the country side of the coin. Sadly he died last year but he had been making records since the 50's. He would drink 10 pots of coffee a day, eat "commodity meat", write songs about fried chicken and paint everything he owned with polka dots.

Johnny Dowd is Bloodshot records singer/songwriter whose quirky voice and stories are the stuff of a hayseed Twilight Zone.

Jack Oblivion is from the Memphis garage scene. His current material with his backing back the Tearjerkers is real fun. Songs titled "Bank, Gun, Jail", "Devil's Border" and " "Head of the Class Clowns" are more fun than front row seats at a Gallagher performance.

Lastly, Mr. Quintron is New Orleanean keyboard wizard who recorded a record with Jack O. called The Oblivions Play 9 Songs with Mr. Quintron. This record is incredible. His garage soul/blues/roots keys are augmented by sonic electronic experiments and light/rhythm machine apparatuses. Quintron's solo records are truely bizarre for his experimentation. During one performance I caught of his in Detroit years ago, his wife, Miss Pussycat, performed a puppet show that would make Timothy Leary proud as punch.

Check 'em out!

Yoko Ono (No, I never really listened to her -- I couldn't stand it)

A lot of Brian Eno's stuff is quite bizzare in an interesting way.

Wacky?

Well Unknown Hinson probably tops the list as the redneck vampire with an electric guitar.

Then there's Los Straitjackets masked Mexican wrestlers that move like robots and play sparkle surf guitars.

And of course The Red Elvises do kick ass rok-n-rol from Siberia with a bass big enough to fly like a kite and an occassional accordian for a Soviet twist.

ha! he's a local boy -- cool to see he's known across the pond! his real name is Danny Baker, quite a picker who discovered the hillbilly vampire market niche.

Senor Coconut! An odd project giving Kraftwerk songs a latin makeover. Kinda purposely cheesy and great, especially the broken-English introduction.

I'll add the White Stripes. I know Jack is pretty hated in guitar circles, but some of that stuff is great light hearted blooze rawk.

Oh, and I like a lot of one man bands. Serious... I can recomend some if you're interested.

I'll take any suggestions! I am in desparate need of new music. Everything has been great so far guys! I have heard quite a few of the suggestions so far (my tastes are quite varied) but there are also quite a few I haven't.

It is also very interesting to see what people find as 'weird' music.

Apocalyptica is a lot of fun and pretty weird. A cello quartet that plays mostly Matalica covers

If you are into experimental jazz , Anthony Brackston writes stuff for musicians in spinning chairs , and a symphony for multiple orchestras on different planets

Yma Sumac is so great, I just checked her out on the suggestion of this thread.

Ya know, I don't know if you guys know about it but I am a Yahoo! Music Engine subscriber. DISCLAIMER: I am also a Yahoo! employee, but work in an entirely different vertical of the company, but. the YME is amazing for discovering new music. I think its like $99 a year and you can listen to unlimited tracks in their entirety. The library is huge, for example I read this thread and entered Yma Sumac, there is was, like 6 records, tons of jazz and guitar music. Not only that but new releases show up on release day, I have already listened to the new Beck record and other things as they come out. For a musicologist I think its a must have.

anyway that's my not so objective plug, but all I know is that if I worked for a different company I would still use the product.

well if you like Bungle and SC3, you'll no doubt like Fantomas and Tomahawk.

Just chase up anything Mike Patton is involved in and you'll find wierd, Trevor Dunn (Bungle bass player) has wierd jazz stuff he does.

The drummer form Bungle (Heifetz) now resides in Melbourne, plays with 'The Cahoots' doing chamber jazz, equally wierd

I didn't know Danny lives here now? Wow! I've met him a couple of times when Bungle and SC3 toured here. Extremely nice guy! Very talented too! But it's no wonder with a grandpa like this.

+1 on Captain Beefheart "Trout Mask Replica" should be on your weird music menu.

The Shaggs. Do a Google search. They actually have a MySpace page. Weird in (I think) an unintentional manner. I find myself laughing uncontrollably every time I hear them.

Get on MySpace and check out:
Bloodshot Bill - one man psychobilly, awesome
Bram Riddlebarger and His Lonesome Band - indie low-fi cowpunk
J. Marinelli and his Angry Young One Man Band - My favorite, poppy post-punk with great lyrics
Ghostwriter - punk/blues disaster (in a good way) from Austin
Phillip Roebuck - Banjo, NYC style
Slim Sandy (whole band or one-man) - Vintage 50's rockabilly

I'll think of more later...
