Randy Bachman?

What ever happened to Randy Bachman?
He had some killer tones on some of those BTO albums.

He still plays up in the PNW. He has a dvd out (I've got it, it's pretty good, lots of talking and a pretty good burton cummings sound alike singer) and his bio by John Einarson is a fun read and helps you realize how stuff happens...

He played strats and gretsch and liked garnet amps (it would be fun to find one to play).... a few years ago he sold his old house (it was listed on the bay) and my wife and I toyed with buying (studio built in) but decided the rain would get us and decided to pass... it is a beautiful, cool house.

Anyway, he can still get it... his son Tal had a pretty big hit a few years ago "She's So High" and he is a good guitar player as well.

Okay--> let the feeding frenzy begin.... (btw, I saw the GW and BTO several times in the 70's... the best was BTO circa 1974-75 with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Jo Jo Gunne and The Doobs.... definite contact high back then at the old Long Beach Arena for a little kid like me.... Bachmann (in the states pronounced Bock man but the family pronunciation is back man) used to do a solo using a drum stick as a guitar pick...

He has financed many of the Lenny Breau recordings and re-issues and has worked hard to have people hear the genius that was lenny breau.

He was touring with Bachman Cummings during the summer. They can't use the name Guess Who anymore because one of the former Guess Who bassists is touring with a crappy cover band under the Guess Who banner.

Seems like there was a lot of feuding in BTO. If you read Rob Bachman's interview, he gives the lowdown. Seems like Randy was too big for his britches and pissed off the rest of the band. BTO is still playing, sans Randy.

I saw him a few years ago at a festival in our Chicago suburb. He put on one of the better shows I've seen in recent memory. He really knows how to squeeze tones out of his stuff, and we were right up front, standing squished against the stage. I went home deaf, but thoroughly enjoyed it...

Actually, he's been touring with a jazz band lately. From what I've seen, his jazz playing still has a long way to go.

He also runs Guitarchives I think

Being a big jazz fan, Randy Bachman also runs Guitarchives, a small label
devoted to cool jazz guitar especially the work of the late, great, under-rated and mostly unknown guitar wiz Lenny Breau.

I saw the Guess Who reunion tour a few years back in 2001 I think. It was the mostly original lineup including Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings. It was a fantastic show! Bachman sang a few BTO songs.

Check out the "Toronto Rocks" DVD from the 2003 SARS concert. A relatively svelte Randy plays a pretty hot set with the Guess Who. He even pulls out the drum stick trick.

CBC Radio one 7 PM

He also hosts a radio show on CBC Radio one Saturday night at 7 PM. If you can find a feed url for it, tonight I think he is covering some history of DooWop.

He's still doing the radio show for the CBC. Recently he was touring with Burton Cummings. They were doing a Burt & Randy songs set instead of a Guess Who reunion gig.

I saw that tour, but no Roy Buchannan...I don't think.
I was only about 14.
Snuck out to Madison Square Garden with my teenybopper girlfriend.
Discovered the blues that night, bought a guitar, and been playing blues ever since.
Thanks, Elvin!!
I didn't even know who he was.
I had to wait until the NY Times made it to the library on microfilm, and find ads for the concert.
Elvin wasn't even billed in some of the ads!!

But in a 1973 Guitar Player interview he said he has "mastered" the Chet Atkins style...

A young friend in Toronto saw that show, and complained because he said they did cover songs. He didn't realize that "American Woman" was theirs.

One of the best shows I have ever seen was BTO here in Austin at the Austin Opry House on 2/8/85 opening for Robin Trower. It had been a decade since BTO's heyday, but they were playing better than ever that night. Randy, Tim Bachman, Fred Turner and Garry Peterson (along with Randy, a former member of the Guess Who) took the stage with "Let It Ride" and everyone was on their feet for the next hour and a half! Trower's set was a let down, he was not playing very well that night, and there was no way anyone could have followed BTO's set that night, it was that good. They played all the hits, a new tune at the time called "Goin' South" and closed their set with a workout on "Takin' Care Of Business". It was simply awesome and quite unexpected in 1985!

Ya they were one of the highlights of that show for me.
