The Yayhoos...The Yayhoos Are Coming.

Hey guys

So there I was makin' a six hour drive and I realized about an hour into the thang that I forgot ALL of my CD's at home...ALL of them. And I've got no XM radio...no cassettes...no nothin'. It was either mainstream radio or 100% pure nothin' for the next five hours. I couldn't take it so I took the next exit and tore my dang vehicle completely apart looking for a disc (or somethin' I wanted to hear more than my own thinkin') as a final resort before boppin' into a truckstop to buy one of them bargin bluegrass CD's or somethin'.

Luckily, I found something - and a favorite that I thought I'd lost! - The Yahoo's "The Yayhoos Are Coming"... does anyone have this thang?

If you do, here's my question...there's a track on there about half way through that's called something like "Save The Second Waltz For Me" - is anyone familiar with it? Who in the holy guacamole is playing guitar on that?

It sounds like a bender and I can't find any information on it. Any help would be much appreciated!

PS - if you aren't familiar with The Yayhoos, Dan Baird, or Eric Ambel check 'em out, you might like what they do! They're both great guitar players and I'm just crazy about 'em both. I know we've talked a lot about "Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired" on here and a few of the tracks from that are also on this Yayhoos demo disc.

Dan Baird is my kind of Tele scum, but I don't know this disc or the songs you mention. I'd like to though.

Call me if you need me to overnight mail some CD's to get you back home! ;)

Unfortunately I only know the one song from a Bloodshot comp. The track is called "Oh Chicago!". One of the best on there.

Found this though: http://www.yayhoos.com/news.htm

The photo section shows many of their cool guitars. Including one of these:

Hummmm...weird!

This is a copied disc and it says "The Yayhoos - Here Come The Yayhoos - demo" in permanent marker...so I have no information and now it's drivin' me crazy.

I don't have a track listing or anything but the songs include a wonky version of "Battleship Chains" and a lot of the tracks that made it onto Dan's "Love Songs For The Hearing Impaired" - a live version of "Come On Dixie" with a great talking intro talk includes him going into a rant about "being so out of tune it HURTS" - and the same version of "Highway Junkie" we've all got (the track that appears on "Rig Rock Deluxe" - which is one of my all time favorite compilations...that's killer, isn't it?)...there's a lot of Rolling Stones type stuff with I believe Eric Ambel singing but I don't remember the hooks in them enough even guess one of the titles.

The song I'm mainly curious about - "Save The Second Waltz For Me" or something like that...I'm guessing at the title just from being familiar with the song - has some freakin' great guitar work on it. It doesn't sound like Dan or Eric and it sounds like a bender. I think it's Eric singing.

Miles, I might take you up on that hahaha! It's going to be an even loooonger drive home! But to be honest, I'm diggin' on this Yayhoos disc so much it'll probably just keep on spinnin' the whole time

I love Dan Baird too...I love his voice, his songwriting, his pickin'...that guy's my dream boat.

all the symptoms, Mandy

"I couldn't take it so I took the next exit and tore my dang vehicle completely apart looking for a disc...."

Were you thinking "I know I stashed one here under the floor mat, and another one in the headliner... and isn't there one inside the spare tire.... oh, i know, I hid a Gene Vincent disc under the air filter cover..."

You didn't start imagining that insects were crawling all over your car, did you?

hahahahaha! Embarrassingly enough...that isn't far from the truth, my friend!

I'd crawl over broken glass to avoid listening to a good times and great oldies oldies station or a new country station. Especially when I'm alone - trust me, no one wants me doing nothin' but thinking and driving for six hours...I'd end up following a whim and driving to Austin and you guys would see a post from me beggin' for someone to make my bail! Thinkin' gets me in trouble!

Hey Mandy-

Here are some remarks from Eric Ambel.....

"that must be a compilation disc that somebody put together.
I believe the song that the guy is trying to figure out
is "Next To the Last Waltz" from my first solo record Eric Ambel "Roscoe's Gang"

that is D. Clinton Thompson playing the guitar and that is all his hands...
no b-bender invloved."

Hey, Mandy. Thanks for the heads-up. I'd never heard of the Yayhoos. I checked out their website and really like what I hear.

Thanks so much, sir! I owe ya one! I wasn't aware of his solo CD's until I checked out the site my pal Blackcat posted. Hopefully I'll come back from this trip with enough money in my pocket to afford 'em! Thanks so, so much for the info - I really appreciate it...you didn't mention that whole "me thinkin' he was cute" part though did ya?

I'm just teasin' - thanks again!

D. Clinton Thompson is one heck of a talent - I'm gonna Google him.

Eric, I'm glad ya did! Definitely one of my favorite bands and I hope you like 'em!

D. Clinton is one screwy guitar player...I saw him with the Morrells some years ago and was pretty floored by some of the wacky stuff he was doing. I [i]really[i] liked the Morrells and about everything that...bass player from Spfld MO...what's his name???...has produced or was involved in.

I swapped some emails with Dan Baird awhile back after seeing the Yayhoos at SXSW...it's actually an Esquire that belonged to Steve Marriott. Baird is a funny, funny guy.

You know how to find me. Or you could just call me during the trip home and I'll sing to you

I'll make those new country stations sound real good!

He has a set of EMG's in it. He still has the original Esquire pickguard...Somewhere in his house...Somewhere.

Dan Baird is one of my favorites. I don't have any Yahoos yet, but I have the best intentions...

Years ago, I interviewed Dan Baird circa Buffalo Nickel for a local music mag and the guy was hands-down the most fun I ever had interviewing someone, a total hoot. Quotable quotes for days.

I think Buffalo Nickel is a criminally underrated album. Great songwriting, great playing, great production.

I really like all the Yayhoo's stuff.

Also, check out the Terry Anderson and the Olympic Ass-kickin' Team album. I think I've listened to that every day for the past two weeks :D

The live version of "Dixie Beauxderaunt" where Dan makes the comment about being so out of tune it hurts is from the CD "Dan Baird and the Sofa Kings - Redneck Savant" which is a must have. Track down Dan Baird and Homemade Sin, a double live CD that is just as good as anything else. It's too bad he doesn't play the States very often.
