What kind of strap are you using?
Woven cotton? Nylon? Tooled leather? Skinny vintage-style "spaghetti" strap? Plain? Fancy?
I always liked just the plain ol' 2" cotton straps, but I'm thinking about those cool Gretsch western straps - especially for my Tele and my project guit'. So, what do you like, fellow TDPRIers?

I use the Planet Waves locking strap. It's 1-3/4" nylon but has a comfy shoulder pad that keeps the guitar in place on my shoulder--so my Gibson, which is neck heavy, doesn't dive. But I mainly got it because it turns any guitar into a locking strap one, without my having to add strap locks to the guitar. It just has a nifty gizmo built into the strap that lets it lock onto any normal strap peg.

Furry Padded ones from "Get 'em, get 'em" I've got one in leopard print and one in zebra print, they look cool and are comfortable, then I also have a Fender strap, black with blue letters and a couple of cheap ones in Black nylon including one from Epiphone with their E logo. Finally I have a black leather one with white music notes. AKA: The Stevie Ray Vaughan strap. Now I need to find a white leather one with Black music notes.

Mainly a leather one that was a gift in '73 but also use 3 leather vintage
type ones and 2 cotton tweed ones. Think I like the old '73 one best as it is great leather and ~2" wide. The vintage one are good though along with the cotton. If I was going to buy one new most likely would look at Levys.

Straps are a funny thing with me. I want a strap to be "classy", not fancy. It's hard for me to find what I want but when I do, I can't make myself spend $50-100 to get it. Go figure...I'll spend major bucks on a guitar but then get tight on a strap. So I end up using 2" nylons that I got for free. I do have one plain black Levy's leather that I use alot.

Levy's
about two inches wide, double thick leather tan in color with dark brown piping. I love it and its been in constant use since about 1999. I think I gave 30 for 40 bucks for it new.
I would love to have one of those fancy hand tooled jobbers, chestnut brown with some tasteful filigree and some acorns maybe, but my pocketbook is sorta frightened at the prospect...maybe someday. Brian

4" black Levy's for a blackguard. put rubberized shelf paper on the inside to counter a slight neck-heaviness on my woodcaster.

I have a tweed strap for my '52 RI. A bunch of cloth woven straps on other guitars and the usual cheap nylon mesh ones. My best strap is a Levy's leather one that was a gift. It's on my Rickenbacker.
What the heck happened to the leather strap I got with my Martin back in the '70's? I must have sold it off with a guitar or something. Last edited by Paul in Colorado; September 19th, 2006 at 02:38 AM. |

I use a Fender vintage strap (that skinny strip of leather with the adjustable pad a few of you have already mentioned and shown) with my 1958 Tele replica to accent that cool, retro, "Fullerton" look and feel.
For all of my other guitars and basses, I use Levy black 2" "soft hand" polypropylene (aka "mesh") straps. Joel |

I'm usually using my pychodelic one's from the 60's and 70's but I bought a nice wide DiMarzzio nylon one with plastic cinch clips at the ends from a garage sale last week for $5 and it gets the job done. It's kind of cool that you can leave the "ends" on the guitar. The only down side is that it can be used on one guitar only cause you screw the ends to the body but that gives me a sense of comfort knowing the guitar is very stable.

Sully's Straps
I've got straps from a guy named Pat Sullivan (Sully). He's more of an acoustic guy, but he'll do them cut to measure.
I especially like his vintage straps made from things like old horse bridles and saddles but completely restored and restitched, including some cool tooled leather for the pads. Each one is one of a kind, and the pricing is reasonable for the really fine qualiy and the great service. (I bought one for a friend for his $100,000+ Loar mandolin.) They also come with a money-back satisfaction guarantee. here's the URL: http://www.sullysstraps.com/index_files/page0002.html |
