Who is a parody of themselves...

My response to the Gene Simmons Thread had me thinking about a new post.

What "entertainer" (used loosely) has / had become a parody of themselves?

Here's my vote...

- Elvis (Vegas Years)
- Wayne Newton (Huh...Vegas Again!)
- Gene Simmons
- David Hasselhoff

I probably will think of more...

David Hasselhoff? Does this imply he HAD credibility at one time? If so, please cite the finer points of his career (apart from Babewatch).

I recall Queen being described as "their own tribute band", which I think sums up what they've done since Freddie Mercury died.

Actually, I kind of agree the Stones are a parody of themselves, and that they are aware of it and play to it.

Great concept

These entertainers are indeed parodies of themselves (IMHO)

Charro
Flavor Flav
Hasselhoff (ugh)
Simon Cowell
Jack Nicholson - a bit of a stretch, but compare his early stuff
Anna Nicole Smith
Tom Cruise (double ugh)

They weren't any better in the '80s.

My vote goes for almost the entire metal genre. Especially anything that attempts to be "serious".

Agree on that one. Although that's not as much parody as tragedy.

I think that, at some point, we all are parodies of ourselves. I don't think being a parody is necessarily a bad thing, either.

Seems like when an artist gets all the signature licks, tricks, songs, sounds and the performance persona together, thats what the audience pays for and expects to see. Sometimes it works forever, almost--as with the Stones. If Mick doesn't preen, dance and jump around, its not the Stones. Pete Townsend with no "windmills"? Willie Nelson without his phrasing and "timing"? Heck, James Taylor has basically been playing the same show for 30 years.

One artist who became a parody of himself, sadly, was Roy Buchanan. Toward the end, he used a lot of flash, just because the audience related to it. Meanwhile, he could play anything, but he knew his bread and butter was the flash.

Funny. I saw Roy in the late 80s and I loved his playing, but there was no flash at all. In fact, Roy stood relatively far away from the edge of the stage, said very little and seemed entirely uncomfortable. Sadly, when I heard of his death I wasn't surprised he committed suicide.

I don't mean this to be critical, just that he didn't seem like a happy person.

I understand--no offense taken at all. My opinion was based on a live concert tape I heard from 88. Of course, that was one night, and there was still a lot of great playing going down. Just a very liberal useage of his trademark effects at times.

As for Roy, I don't think he was always happy either. Yet, many speak of him as being warm, funny and generous at times. He had a lot of bad substance abuse problems. Seems like he was a shy introvert who lacked self esteem or was cursed by moodiness--but he had a marvelous gift to play guitar. And even if he did sometimes parody himself, I wish he was with us today to continue to do so.

I saw him during his "pointy headstock" period and I would have to agree.

The show was very good, if you could get past the shrill EMGs through a JC120 tone, he wasn't phoning it in or hamming it up, but on and off stage you could see that life was wearing down on him.

I think you might be on to something there Heather !, once we are known as being 'one way' or another other people see you that way and maybe you conform to it.
