what's the deal with age around here?

this is an informal poll, not wanting to go the push-button route cuz it's so formal and commits you to a stance.

i've noticed most people don't put their age in their profile. is this because you feel age is immaterial? you don't want people to know how old you are because it's none of their business? you'd rather have them guess by the content of your posts? you'd rather be judged upon your merits than your chronological heredity?

i'm at the geezerly end of the TDPRI spectrum, but one thing on this board that fascinates me is the musical evolution of the members i find interesting -- . some of the young cats teach me a lot when i tend to get set in my ways, and some of the guys in their prime inspire me to keep pushing. and every geezer Tele survivor has my utmost respect!

here's why i bring up the issue ... when somebody's talking about their music and their Tele approach and their philosophy of the art itself, it's extremely important to know what they were listening to when they were teenagers!

therein lies the key to a musician's personality, IMHO!

as am i! but i notice you've got your age on your profile ... i'm wondering what's the deal with the folks who are reluctant, shy or disagreeable to putting their age out for all to see.

They're probably in their 30s, that's why!

i'm a '48 model....the music i enjoy listening to is a getaway of sorts.....as such it isn't necessarily what i'm about as a musician/player.....'sides one must transcend one's influences....

EDIT::: a team of research scientists operating beneath the South Pole determined that the music people listened to in their teens affected their musical destiny.

I don't understand the relevance of the age thing. (reason for not posting my age)

I guess, as you said, age is important in discussing musical influences. Maybe I'm a little niave. I always figured a guitar enthusiast could appreciate good playing regardless of the age of the music. The technique and tone being the common factor, but i sure haven't heard any 20 year olds ranting and raving about Chet Atkins. That blows my theory out I've the water. Okay I'll give in, I was 20, about 17 years ago

aha! a chink in the wall i'm trying to plumb. i still maintain: what you listened to as a teenager foreshadows your musical destiny.

it matters!

a month away from 42.

I think we live it out for our own personal reasons.

Average age of a TDPRI-er

From memory, and of course, being 45 I'm starting to loose mine! - Paul published the average age of the TDPRI-er some time ago and it was mid-40s.

We do have some teenage members but unless there has been a major enrollment from the teenagers and those in their early 20s then I'm sure the average age is stated above.

I've inlcuded mine in my profile because I am who I am, and my age is part of me, but I respect those who choose not to for whatever reasons. Different strokes and all that!

Peter

I believe it's automatically calculated from your profile as you have the option to enter your date of birth.

Well... I'm not sure why I didn't put it in. When I signed up for the board, I was looking for some specific help with a tele project -- hadn't planned on really sticking around, so I just entered the minimum info. and posted my question.

For what it's worth, when I was a teenager, I wasn't really listening to the popular music of the times (a lot of my friends weren't either). I listened to stuff that was released 15 to 20 years before (and some modern guitar-based stuff). And I agree, there probably is a correlation between what one listened to in his or her formative years and one's "musical destiny," but I'm not sure that you can figure out what someone was listening to just by looking at his or her age.

Well, there are all kinds of guitar pickers in all age groups, but I've seen 20 somethings giving it up to older guys than I would have ever heard about, and I'm 51. I learned about most of my favorite guitar players from my son, WildRiceChris- and he just turned 24.

I've seen posts from young folks here who have wisdom beyond their years, and posts from geezers who will never "get it".

Age is irrelevant, as far as the knowledge goes. Judge by the content of the posts, rather than the context of chronology. There are more guitar players than there are musicians- if you catch my drift...

I think alot of it is just old web habits. When I started surfing the web, nobody would dream of using their real name on a bb. It all seems kind of immature now. I just don't want to go through the hassle of changing anything.

I'm 47, and try my best to write in coherent english. I ain't hiding from nobody, nobody's hidng from me.
