Don't buy a les paul. They are very uncomfortable to play anyway. I don't know why anyone plays them. Sure they sound good but an sg gets you basically the same sound. The telecaster is a much better guitar design. Sooooo much more comfortable. If you want one, buy a cheap one first and decide if you really like them. buy a cheap epiphone or something.

I'm one of those old guys w/alot of great guitars. I play my Les Pauls alot.
I agree, don't sell your tele if you like it. But don't waste your time and money on a cheap LP. Save up and buy a good one. The recent standards are great, buy a clean used one, you can usually get your money back out of it, if you don't bond with it. Also, IMO, An SG and a Les Paul ARE NOT the same. Russ |

If you think a Les Paul and an SG are the same, no offense but you've never played a good LP.

i have an epiphone g-400, basically a unbound 61' SG copy
and boy did i tear that thing for everything its worth. the little body just doesnt do it for me, i need something that will give me that great feeling, on sg's i feel like im playing on a piece of partical board. and i hate how the neck sets at the 22 fret, after about 2 hours of townshend whammy,s the neck is pretty much bent.... |

Les Pauls
It's funny.I have never had a problem with the weight of the Les Paul and I think they are very comfortable guitars to play. i really don't mind the weight and the way that the neck tilts back is at just the right angle for me. And, Fenders are great, but unlike a fender, a Les Paul sounds great through ANYTHING.

test the water first
try a LP copy first
Epiphone or something so that it's not a big $$ impulse buy that you might regret. Switching completely to a LP might mean a dominoe effect of a lot of other changes to make you happy...amp, amp settings, weight, stomp boxes....etc..ad infinitum.... You'll definitely have to sling the guit lower on your body to get the look right I need (insert "want") '56 goldtop w/ those P90s

Get a Tokai or Orville Les Paul or even a Japanese made Epiphone.
Les Pauls are way easier to play than Teles and Strats because of the shorter scale. They are also easier to sound better on for some reason.

Just buy an Epi LP and change the pups, that way you can have both.

Careful. That can be good and bad. I did it a few years ago and it was a lot of fun to be able to pick some Seymour Duncans I always wanted, locking tuners etc etc. and construct a killer guitar. But I must say, in hindsight the Epi Les Paul quality really is sub-par to an actual Gibson (in my own opinion, of course) and I found that the Epi was disappointing and not a real representation of what a Paul is really like. It looked sweet, sounded sweet and was priced right. But in the end, it only made me want a real one even more and that 400-500 bucks (pups/tuners/guitar) would have been better spent on the real deal. A Gibson Goldtop Deluxe followed about a year later. I still play the Epi, and it's fine. But it's nothing like the Gibson. If you know you want a real Paul, get one. Even if it's a Studio or Classic versus the Standard or Supreme. |

I'm not sure I'm going to be welcome around here much longer...
Yesterday, I applied my ASAT Tribute, my only Tele type, as trade toward another Les Paul. This one is a sunburst Classic Plus with a beautiful flame top, plus the previous owner had upgraded the pickups to a great Fralin set. It's light and resonates like no LP I've known. I grew up playing a Paul, and my silverburst Custom has been my main guitar since 1980. I wanted to try a Tele type last year, thinking I would inject a little twang into my repertoire. It didn't work out for me. I say, it's better to have another guitar that I'm going to play and enjoy than to have one that is going to sit in a closet and not get played.
