Most emotional song dedicated to another artist
I guess we all know that it's a "Us knows us" world in the music world and that musicians are mortal human beings too. There are many songs in which artists celebrate their fallen brothers and sisters who were also in the scene. Let's talk about those songs and the love that the one singing them puts in them.
"In my darkest hour" by Megadeth, dedicated to Metallica Bassplayer Cliff Burton. Dave Mustaine wrote this one after hearing about Burton's demise during Metallica's "Master of puppets tour" in 1986. Known for his sharp and cynical lyrics, "In my darkest hour" shows a completely different side of Mustaine, here he's almost screaming in anguish over the fact that he never got to say goodbye to his buddy Cliff. "Let me in" by REM and "Tear jacker" by the Red Hot chili peppers, dedicated to Kurt Cobain. The cool thing about the alt rock scene in the early 1990's was that all those greats band at the time frequently toured together, so it wasn't that unusual to see the RHCP, Sonic youth, REM, Nirvana and Soundgarden on the same bill. That's how both Anthony Kiedis and Micheal Stipe met the frail genius that was Kurt Cobain. The two songs couldn't be any more different aside from the one they were dedicated to. "Tear Jacker" has Kiedis recalling the first time he met Cobain and how often the RHCP would see Nirvana live and what a nice person Cobain was in person. While "Let me in" is a cry in anguish for release, to find the shelter from his personal demons, it is by far one of the darkest REM songs. "Knock me down" By the Red Hot Chili Peppers, dedicated to original RHCP guitarist Hillel Slovak. Slovak died from a heroin overdose and Kiedis vowed that he wouldn't suffer a similar fate. In the song he scowls to Hillel about never having sought help against the drugs "don't be afraid to show your friends that you hurt inside inside pain's part of life don't hide behind your false pride it's a lie your lie" and how much he misses having him around. "i'm part of you and you're part of me, why did you go away?" And the lyrics, "If you see me getting high, knock me down, I'm not bigger than life" are him telling Hillel, "If I do anything stupid with my life, knock me down, or set me straight." "All those years ago" By George Harrison, dedicated to John Lennon. A Beatles song in all but name, Paul and Ringo accompanied George on this musical love letter, recalling their friendship and all they went through. As with "Knock me down" this is a very uptempo song. A bittersweet salute from the quiet Beatle to the most outspoken Beatle.

Speaking of songs for Lennon.....
Paul's "Here Today" was a very touching tribute to John.
McCartney also sang on Carl Perkins' Lennon tribute...."My Old Friend". You can even hear Paul's voice quiver at some points in the song. (It was still pretty early in the mourning process). Later...

Robin Trower's "Song For A Dreamer" on Procol Harum's album "Broken Barricades" was for Jimi Hendrix.....and i've a sneaking suspicion Trower's "Daydream" from the album "Twice Removed From Yesterday" was also written for/about Jimi although to my knowledge Trower's never said as much.....

"Free Bird" was dedicated to Duane Allman. So many times I've burned my thumb holding up a lighter for that one!
"Rock and Roll Heaven" by the Righteous Brothers mentions so many other artists, like Jim Croce, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and more. Quiet Riot's "Thunderbird" was dedicated to Randy Rhoads.

I can't verify this but I've always considered Yes' 'All Good People' to be about John Lennon (the 'Your Move' section with its references to 'Instant Karma' and that beautiful, almost subliminal 'All we are saying is Give Peace a Chance' refrain). Of course John was still around in 1970 but a nice tribute all the same. Maybe Jon Anderson really wanted The Beatles to get back together (Yes were so-named via the 'Yellow Submarine' film weren't they?).

"Fly Away" by Bobby (Weir) and the Midnights was written for Bob Marley. "Criptical Envelopment/That's it for the Other One" by The Dead was about Neil Cassidy. There's a song Warren Haynes wrote on the Phil Lesh and Friends album "There and Back" about Jerry Garcia. Can't think of the title. I thought "Superstar" was a groupie's lament, not a song for Delaney??? |

Joan Baez' ironic tribute to Dylan tripped my trigger -- "Diamonds and Rust." of course he hadn't died, but their relationship had.
the whole album "Tribute to the Best Damn Fiddle Player in the World" by Merle Haggard was a heartfelt salute to western swing legend Bob Wills, who was dying but made it to the sessions to hear what amounted to Merle fronting the Texas Playboys, Bob's heyday band.

I don't know if this counts, but the members of queen wrote one song together after Freddie's death, called "No One But You". It was dedicated to him, and was a duet with the guitarist and the drummer (the bassist can't sing). It's really touching.

i've always wondered who chris cornell was singing about in black hole sun in the line "no one sings like you anymore"? my favourite might be danko/manuel by the drive by truckers. brings a tear to my eye anyway. worst tribute to of the greatest singers ever: tribute to a king by william bell. trully terrible lyrics. EDIT: wikipedia suggest that it might have been about cobain.

By far the best in my mind is "Fortworth Blues" Steve Earle singing about Townes van Zandt.
If you get a song like that written about you, you know you did something right.

The first verse always gives me chills: "In Fort Worth all the neon's burning bright, the pretty lights, red and blue...but they'd shut down all the honky tonks tonight, and say a prayer or two, if they only knew".

song dedicated to another artist
Ian Hunter: Michael Picasso Hunter's moving tribute to his late friend and great guitarist Mick Ronson
Ian Hunter Michael Picasso Lyrics (Ian Hunter) Once upon a time not so long ago people used to stand and stare at the Spider with the platinum hair they thought you were immortal We had our ups and downs like brothers often do but I was there for him he was always there for me and we were there for you How can I put into words what my heart feels? it's the deepest thing when somebody you love dies I just wanted to give something back to you gift to gift Michael, Michael Picasso good night You used to love our house you said it was relaxing now I walk in the places you walk I talk in all the spaces you talk it still hasn't sunk in Are the words real that come into my head on a morning walk? do the shadows play tricks with my mind? For it feels like nothing has changed but I know it has Michael, Michael Picasso good night Heal me won't you heal me? nothing lasts forever set me free Heal me won't you heal me? I'm the one who's left here heal me heal me heal me You turned into a ghost surrounded by your pain and the thing that I liked the least was sitting 'round Hasker Street lying about the future And we all sit in a room full of tears on a windy day and I looked out but none of these words seem right I just wanted to give something back to you gift to gift Michael, Michael Picasso good night |

An album rather than a song, but "Songs for Drella" is Lou Reed and John Cale's powerful, bare-bones, warts-and-all tribute to their Velvet Underground mentor, Andy Warhol.
In another genre, I'd nominate Charles Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," his jazz tribute to Lester Young. Jeff in Boston |
