What's up with the Black Crowes?
Saw this posted on an industry board--I had no idea that things were so stormy in Croweville:
------------------------------------------- Has anyone been following this drama? They are one of my favorite bands due to amazing musicianship and unwillingness to ever play by the rules. I realize that the band (and management) have pissed off nearly every player in the industry by now, but you have to give them a little credit for simply existing. Here's what's going on: 1. On Monday, it was announced that longtime keyboard player, and hands-down fan favorite, Ed Harsch is leaving the band due to "health reasons" - although Billboard reports that he was fired. A replacement has already been announced, and the tour resumes next week. 2. "The Lost Crowes", a collection of unreleased material akin to "The Basement Tapes" was scheduled to be releaded yesterday, but was pulled at the very last second due to pressing errors at Rhino. The recall happened so late,in fact, that many retaliers are carrying the record, and it is also available on Rhapsody and itunes. 3. Since reuniting winter of 2005, the band has been on tour non-stop - and not ONCE have they done any press or interview of any kind. 4. Chris Robinson and Kate Hudson. 5. The return on this endless tour of Marc Ford on guitar, the "Mick Taylor" of The Black Crowes, who was fired in 1997 for drug problems. Before re-joining the Crowes, he had a high-profile, well-paying gig with Ben Harper. Did he make the right decision? 6. The Summer 2006 tour HAD to lose money, with most every stop at well below capacity, even with heavy radio and ticket-giveaways. 7. No record contract. 8. Their manager, Angelus Entertainment, has one client: The Black Crowes. 9. The return on this tour of Sven Pipien on bass, who played with the band from 1997-2000.In 2000, Sven was not only fired from the band, but they actually photoshopped him out of all pictures in 2000's "Live at the Greek" release with Jimmy Page. The original bass player, Johnny Colt, now plays Mom-rock with Train.

I believe the health reports about Ed...I mean, look at that guy. Ugh! Just kidding... The blog of the guy replacing him made reference to wishing Ed gets better, so that leads me to think health is the culprit.
I don't think any of what was listed is a problem. As for the marriage of Chris & Kate...countless musicians have had numerous marriages. For Marc, I'm glad he rejoined the fold. I think he did his best work with the Crowes. Maybe he thinks the same. I saw his ACL with Ben Harper...good, but not the same "fire" as the Crowes. He's a guitarist, he wants to play, and I think he satisfies that need more in the Crowes. And personally, I'd love to be the only client of a manager...all the focus would be on me. I don't think any of that stuff means there's a problem. Look at the Stones...they've had much worse and they're still around.

So far this year, the reviews of the concerts have been pretty positive. I'm looking forward to seeing them at the Vegoose Music Festival here in Vegas in October.
Heather, thanks for your comments on the concert and new album. After reading your thoughtful posts, your opinion carries some weight. I'm hoping to pick-up a copy of their CD at the store in the next few days. Regards, Rob |

What's up?
Likely too many drugs, and most definitely 2 too-large egos (the Brothers Robinson). I love these guys' music, but what a bunch of wingnuts. If they "love the music" so much, why don't they just stop all the drama and MAKE IT? (And I've been in long-term bands, I know all about the drama involved. Everybody should just grow up, shut up, and play.) The only other band that had this much ridiculous drama was Guns N Roses. Another case of too many drugs and one LARGE wackadoo ego (Axl.) Again, love the music, but COME ON YOU GUYS...
