John Hammond - Bluesman

I love John Hammond!! Duke Robillard said this and it's also true for me too, John helped me to make the transition from white to black Blues. I don't think I ever heard anyone do Robert Johnson songs better than Johnny Hammond (except Robert ) Seen him many times in the late 60's and early 70's, always a great show. Great slide player, distinctive harp style, Good vocals. One of the few White guys with a genuine Black attitude.

Yeah he's definitely got some soul and mojo going on. Seen him in a small club a few years ago - great show. Loved his cover album of Tom Waits songs

Got to see him about 8 years ago from the front row at a "bluegrass" festival. It was like seeing an old blues guy; in fact, it reminded me of the time I sat even closer to Mississippi Fred McDowell. Everything he did seemed inevitable, even sort of absent. Both of them shared this Zen thing of near-perfection while disappearing into the songs. It's hard to express.

I'm another big fan of John Hammond's

He always seems to give intense & heartfelt performances. I have never seen anyone do a better (or as good) a job at playing harp and guitar at the same time. I've warmed to his vocals over the years and he seems to be singing better with the passing of time.
