Producer Of Your Choice?

If you could have the producer of your choice, who would it be?

For me, it would be Rick Rubin. I love the stuff he's produced. He has the rare ability to capture the essence of the artists he works with. I love the powerful directness of his recordings. Oddly then, my second choice would be like 180 degrees opposite, Brian Eno. Layers of sound, spacey effects and reverb/delay, Eno creates immense sonic soundscapes. I think it would be a cool experiment, anyway. My style is what I call "three chords and a lie", so really, Rick would be a better choice. Since neither will ever produce any of my recordings, I try to study their techniques, as well as others, like Jimmy Miller, George Martin, Jimmy Page, Don Gehman, John "Mutt" Lange and others and apply what I can to my multitrack recordings. I think vision is the most important element, knowing where to take things, but in a flexible way, sensitive and open to the moment.

Peace, Heather

Maybe not so odd - those would be my first two choices, too! I love what Rick Rubin has done with Johnny Cash and the RHCPs, and I love what Brian Eno has done with Bowie and U2. If I had to choose, I'd probably pick Eno just from what I've read about his approach to producing in various books about Bowie. Come to think of it, Bowie wouldn't be a bad choice either!

George Martin, for sentimental reasons.
Daniel Lanois, for that sound.
Joe Henry, just cause I dig what he does.

Rick Ruben and Don Was. Both are visionary producers who can frame an artist in a way that highlights their strengths. And it doesn't much matter what genre or style the artist works in either. They will make you sound fabulous and bring the best out of you.

without disagreeing with anybody, I'd like to throw the Nigel Godrich hat into the ring (Radiohead, Beck, Paul McCartney, etc) and maybe give a little shout-out to Bjork, who makes consistently amazing-sounding records.

Don Dixon

From early REM to the Smithereens, all good stuff. He's not real famous, but I like his work very much. I always thought that if I every made a CD, I'd like Don to produce it. Aside from production, he's great writer, bassist and has one of the most soulful voices I've ever heard.

Here's an example of one of his own songs from the early 80's.

I was wondering if anyone would mention the killer.

What about Bruce Dickinson? "If Bruce Dickinson says he wants more cowbell, then we should probably give him more cowbell!"

Mitchell Froom (just listen to the Suzanne Vega albums he did, plus latin playboys etc)

Daniel Lanois (what can I say, great producer and great musician)

Jon Brion (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright and his own soundtrack work)

John Parish (Eels, Tracy Chapman, Pj Harvey)

Quincy Jones has produced one or two okay records. Oh, and I think he does a little bit of arranging, too... ;-) CS
