The Red Devils on Dutch TV.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhgbHeagoNE

The Devils were on tour in my country in may 1993 to support their "King-king" record. When this performance was recorded, Lester Butler and the others were completely exhausted but you wouldn't know it from this performance. This version of "Automatic" blows the one from "King-king" completly away.

RIP Lester Butler, you were one of the greats.

These guys are wonderful!! I had never heard of them. God bless the internet. I've come across more great music in the past two years than I would have ever heard in a lifetime thanks to the Net. It will be the salvation of music.
They reminded me a bit of the old Butterfield band, but a bit more laid back. Thanks for the link. Gonna look for more stuff by these guys.

That King-King record was one of my favorite blues discs at the time(it's still right up there). The strat player reminds me of Jimmie Vaughan in the old Thunderbird days. Great to finally see what the band looks like. Anyone know what they are doing these days?

Thanks for posting that, great stuff.

Brewboy, no idea what the rest of the band is up to, but Lester Butler sadly passed away a couple of years ago, and drummer Bill Bateman (the Blasters' original drummer!) is now touring with the Cramps.

Thanks Blazer,
They performed in Vera Groningen in 1993/4.
One of the best gig's in my memory.

Anyone in Holland with material of the Pink Pop Gig in 1993?

Best regards
Chris

I got "King King" when it first came out. I had never heard of them but it just looked like it would be a great CD. Boy, was I more than right. Those guys were awesome!

That was Paul Size on the strat.

That was Paul Size playing the strat. Paul moved from Denton, Texas to California to play with The Red Devils. The Red Devils also went into the studio to back up Mick Jagger on a couple of dozen blues classics. There are bootlegs of that stuff but there was never an "official" release. Paul is currently playing with Sugar Ray and The Bluetones. He replaced ocassional TDPRI poster Monster Mike Welch. Mike is also a very talented and tasty player. Incidentally, The Red Devils had requested a tape of Paul Size before he was offered an audition. He sent them a tape of his good friend, fellow Dentonite Jon Moeller. They never knew the difference.

Last night when my band rehearsed I took Paul Size's licks from "Automatic" and played them in SRV's "Pride and joy" just to see how it would sound.

After we finished the song, our Bassplayer goes "That was awesome! Keep doing that, it sounds so much better this way. You played Jimmy Vaughan in a Stevie Ray song."

I guess having learned the licks from "King-king" back to back is starting to pay off.

I just discovered the Red Devils via TDPRI. How did I ever miss them? They should have been huge.

I heard a song of their's covered by Matt Woodburn and Cheryl Arena, "She's Dangerous". I found out about the Red Devils from them. I spent years scoruing the internet looking for their cd, and finally found it. Awesome disc, I think I dig it out tonight and give it a spin. Thanks for the reminder.

Off-topic but sort of related, anybody know what Matt and Cheryl are up to these days? Matt is back in Boston, I think Cheryl moved to Texas (she's from there, I believe).
