I really "crashed and burned" tonight...

and it wasn't pretty.

I got back in time to play in the playoffs for the softball team that let me play this year. I'd only been playing catcher so far this season but tonight they told me to play outfield. It's been a l-o-n-g time since I've tried this and I made three bad errors before they took me out of the game.
We lost the game by a margin that I was responsible for. I felt the lowest I've felt in a long time. Although I know I haven't put in the practice time I think that may be it for softball for me.

I'll stick to guitar playing from now on.

Hey, there is an old axiom in baseball: Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. The great thing about the game is that tomorrow there is usually another one... lick your wounds, do some practice and get'em next time.

If every baseball player who had a bad game quit, there would be no more baseball. Hang in there. You only loose if you quit.

Blame it on the Texas BBQ.

Or the Texas Mexican Food.

Or the Texas Hamburgers.

Or the Texas Steakhouses.

Or the Texas Dancehalls.

Or the... did you get a Funnel Cake while you where here?

Maybe chet forgot to wear that awesome cowboy hat that he got. It would help keep the sun out of his eyes better.

BTW chet, I forgot to mention how nice that hat looked. You picked out a really nice style.

Don't worry about it...

I hope you are being harder on yourself than your teammates have been on you. It's just a game unless you have professional aspirations.

I would refer you to the recent BudLight commercial where the softball team chastizees the guy who screams about winning. They have it right...it's should be about the beer and the good time.

Outfield's tough for me....

....as a kid, I was Willie Mays out there, but anymore, my depth perception and judgment won't allow me to field fly balls with any consistency.

You're out there and trying, you shouldn't stop. If anything, maybe go to a less competitive and/or co-ed league, but don't quit!

If you were once a competitive baseball player

then I totally understand. I hung it up for that very reason. Softball in and of itself is a step down from hardball, and then when the wheels and depth perception and "jump" go, it's all downhill. Really, what is the use. Sorry.

Exactly- my depth perception and judgment are way off. I was missing balls that would've been easy when I was in my 20's.

They play another game tonight but I'm not going. It's the reason I didn't miss playing for all those years- it's too much like work to be good. It takes alll the fun out of "playing".

Listen to the Who album Tommy by candlelight a la Almost Famous. Nothing better than that to help you feel better.
