New York Renaissance Faire
Spent the day with the entire family today at the Renaissance Faire - great food, great drink, great entertainment, and great weather. It runs now every weekend until September 24th, and if you're in the NY metro area, it's worth the trip from anywhere. Just 35 miles north of The Apple in Tuxedo, NY, they transform Sterling Forest into a true renaissance village complete with costumes, buildings, and professional character actors. A little pricey, but no worse than what we're used to at Yankee Stadium or any other major venue. Some great music also, with lots of flute, mandolin, harp, recorder, and percusssion of various types. Even some old sea shanty tunes! Takes you back to a much simpler time and it truly is a great experience for kids of all ages. We've been going every now for about the past 10 years, and every year it just gets better and better. A great place to go to forget the pressures and demands of the 21st century, and a great way to hook up with the likes of Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, and The Sheriff of Nottingham.

humorous?
Xstonr, as with anything in life, you'll always find people who are fanatical, and cult-like, about many topics. My experiences with most people and employees at the Faire has been very positive - professional Shakespearean actors role playing, college students taking up acting, donating their time, men and women from many different walks of life volunteering their time because of their interest in that period. Certainly, some over-due it, just as with anything else - be it the "Trekkie's", or the "Deadheads", or the the "Parottheads", or even the "Goths", some are prone to excess. Heck, even some here are prone to excess concerning amps. or guitars. While you may find their behavior "humorous", I'm sure many find their devotion to a certain "thing" almost inspiring. I'm glad, and thankful, that there are people who are fanatical about Civil War Re-enactments so they can continue to teach future generations about the past. I'm glad and thankful that there are Viet Nam Veterans groups who are fanatical about their cause, in order to reverse some of the injustices shown them in the past. I'm glad and thankful, in general, when people embrace any topic or subject and strive to learn as much as possible about that certain subject, and help distribute that knowledge to others. Just because someones interests aren't in line with your own, I don't believe I would categorize their passion for a certain topic as "humorous".

I've been to Renaissance Faire, and it has absolutely no attraction for me. I've got to agree, I find the die-hard participants' dedication to Renaissance Faire almost humorous. They need to get a life. They should spent more time posting about guitars on the internet or something.

I've been a few times. It's kind of an interesting day trip, but not something I'm into. I don't know if the Rennaisance Fairs are related the the "Society for Creative Anachronism", but thes folks are really into it.

uh -oh
sorry guys - wasn't advocating that whole Renaissance thing, just the fact that it's a nice day out and a good time was had by all. As I said earlier, in almost any group, you have those who take it to the extreme - and there is a difference between dedicated and "extreme", and would certainly have to include the Anarchists in that group of the "extreme"

My statement of almost humorous wasn't meant to put anyone down. Almost humorous is in fact, was almost humorous to me. People can do, act out, perform, in anyway they want. They can even be medieval, not that there's anything wrong with that.
