Raymondos Dilema #2
You have a particularly awkward mother in law she is a real pain in the arse. You wife cares for her very much loves her dearly but you dont atall. Sees never thought you were good enough for her daughter. Your father in law on the other hand used to be a telecaster enthusiast (he has passed away) and has two telecasters, both originals, one from the 60's one from the 70's. You mother inlaw wont let you play them because they are very sentimental to her and she leaves them in her room untouched.
Now heres the question... your mother in law and you wife are going on a long weekend away and leave you a key, so you can go in and water the plants and whatever while they are gone, do you take an amp round and play the teles all weekend? or do you respect her wishes for them never to be played? |

You play it ............. but .......... are they in cases? If not, they could have a little dust on them which could show they were handled. If they are a little dusty, you should take a small bag of dust with you. After playing them, wipe them down and re-apply dust from the bag. Don't disturb anything else in her room. If she left the door to her room closed, check for anything she might have done to tell her the door was opened. Wipe fingerprints from the door knob and anything you touch in her room............ Good luck.
Oh yeah.............. make sure her neighbors don't see you taking an amp into her house............ and don't play loud enough for the neighbors to hear. When you have a delima ........... make delimanade.

You play 'em!!!!! You have somebody take pics of you doing a Chuck Berry duckwalk across the floor with a Tele slung across your shoulder. Maybe one of you jumping off of your amp, another one holding it up like your gonna do a Townsend with it. Then you blow 'em up to poster size and leave 'em all over her house. Make sure the Teles are placed back exactly like you found 'em - to the last inch. The bag of dust is a great idea.
Not that I'm slanted by my ex mother-in-law.....

I would bring a PRS with me, go to the hag's place, and I would play the Teles all weekend long, to my heart's content.
When she came back, and would start *****ing about it, I would do a Townshend on her head with the PRS. That way, everybody's happy, and no harm done to the Teles. PS: In my dreams, my mother in law has 2 teles sitting in a room at her house. |

No question at all. I have a few guitars. THey are my personal property. If I want to live in a world where people respect my rights as a personal property owner, I need to do my part to make it a world where people respect others' personal property rights. Seems simple to me. That's my $0.02.

I would think the (LATE) Father-In-Law would WANT the Teles
played and enjoyed. Think of what HE wanted. Too bad he didn't leave them to you!

On a side note, my late father-in-law owned a radiator grill Shure mic from the 50s, mint condition. I offered to buy it from him many times, as he was not a musician, and had no intention of using it. He always refused.
It was given to me by my mother-in-law after the died. Okay, game on, Let's go back to hag bashing :-) |

I enjoy a good joke. I just wince at that thought of some clown in my den touching my stuff. Don't get me wrong, my friends are welcome to pick up my instruments any time, whether I'm there or not. I make it a point to have friends who treat me and my stuff with respect. That being said, I'd love to photoshop a pic of me tinkling in the open cases.

talk to the wife
time to talk to yer missus, there's some things that have to be set straight right about now. She better get the old gal in line. You have married into the family, those guitars are there for you! The mother-in-law doesn't have a clue, the wife don't care, those guitars were left by a (probably very cool) father for someone to play! I wonder what the old guy would think of his wife's "shrine to a dead husband"? Don't sneak around when the hag is away, get it out in the open now, just pack 'em up and take 'em home and be done with it.

how about you make peace with the "old hag" (nice) so that she wants you play them.
i seperated from my fiance 4 years ago and haven't spoken to her in nearly as long. her dad on the other hand (who when he was diagnosed with some pretty serious cancer about the same time insisted that i take his beloved acoustic guitar and give it a good home) still emails me regularly to shoot the **** about albert lee, les paul and whatever's on his mind. he's rich and his daughter is now a successful architect, the whole family is very well to do. i'm a poor and unsuccessful musicain and probably always will be. i don't think he ever thought i "wasn't good enough". at the risk of sounding like an episode of oprah: why don't you mend those brides man? you're married and that means forever. not just your wife, her family too. make everyone's lives happier and easier make the effort to respect the family's wishes. you may just end up owning those bad boys. if it was me. i wouldn't touch them. the fridge and drinks cabinet on the other hand...

If it were me I'd play them abit...but VERY carefully and quietly. And not too much. And I'd make sure they were put back exactly the way she left them. Best to avoid trouble.
It's abit sneaky, but I suspect she's not letting you play them more out of spite than out of respect for her husband. Since my answer is in between the given choices I'm not voting. |

The way I see it, you've got to take the MIL's health into account. Will she still be alive in 5 years? 10? Maybe you should just wait, rather than piss her off and make sure she leaves the guitars to someone else when she kicks.
On the other hand, you don't want her to sell them if she gets sick or put in a home and has to spend down all her assets. Personally, I doubt I would be able to resist.
