I did the same thing with Eddie Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man" solo. He plays the lick one string at a time doing these stretches so ridiculous that I've read you actually have to hold your guitar up a certain way to reach all the notes. But just look at the notes you're using and you can find a much easier way to play it. Now I only have to move one finger to play the same lick!

That pick and fingers part is the part i always skipped when doing that song, whereas the runs were fine. Would be interested to see what you came up with.

Congratulations.. I love it when that happens, and it happens frequently, even with the best transcribed material.
Hal Leonard's people claim they correct and revise the stuff with each printing, but I've got a beat up first edition of the Electric LadyLand transcription that's full of my own annotations and embellishments - Last time I was at the music store, I took a good look at a current edition - revised graphic design, new fonts, new photos, etc., but a lot of the clams - not just wrong fingerings, but WRONG NOTES, too - WERE STILL THERE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. I guess you could say that it keeps us on our toes - but given the price they charge for these things, and the obviousness of many of the errors - it's pretty dissappointing. It does provide a great impetus to learn to read music, as the fingering choices are then left to the player. But I'm too old and lazy, so I'm always on the lookout for video/dvd performances with lots of closeups on the fretting hand. So far, my reworked fingering's always been identical to the way the artist plays it. I've reached the point where I'm wondering if it's not a little private joke amongst transcribers, who break up the monotony of their work by tabbing out positions that are physically impossible to play - knowing we poor schlubs'll just figure we're just not good enough to play it.. and give up. It reminds me of those stories about some of my heroes who didn't realize that Chet and Les were using delays - so they figured out how to play all those extra notes by themselves. Like I said, I'm lazy. I've got TWO delays on my board now, and I'm on the waiting list for another.. Like the old saying; If it seems to good to be true, it probably is. In this case; If it appears to be too difficult to play, they've definitely written it down wrong. |
