Without being mean about it, he's a super-capable musician who's also a bit wacko and now it's evolved into a bit of a schtick. There's pictures of him without the bucket--his real name is Brian Carrol.

I've seen some old pictures of him sans bucket, and he does look a bit like Stern. There was an article in Musician magazine a while back talking about him and how he has problems dealing with people, was still living at home at the time and hence the mask to hide behind when he leaves the house.

a friend of mine, who had tickets to a buckethead show that was cancelled at the last minute, told me a story he heard on a metal message board.

apparently, axl was attempting to recruit buckethead to resurrect guns n' roses. buckethead initially agreed, then flaked out on axl. axl finally got buckethead to sit down and talk about it, but the only place buckethead would agree to have the conversation was on the space mountain ride at disneyworld (land?). as the story goes, they rode the ride continuously for close to an hour, refusing to get off, while axl attempted to bring buckethead back into the fold.

may not be true, but from what i hear about those guys, it might as well be.

I did a image search for Brian Carrol but that turned up nothing of note. My search of Buckethead turned up a lot of stuff, of course, including this:

...but I don't think that's him. Under properties, part of the description is "halloween1998"...which probably means this was just some dude going dressed as Buckethead. Besides, this guy's wearing a watch and a wedding band, neither of which is worn by the real Buckethead.

the dude in this pic is Saul Hudson, better known to most as Slash, at a halloween show Velvet Revolver dressed up as the "GNR" of the music awards which at the time included Buckethead...there was a story on metalsludge.com about it maybe a year or so ago, rather funny if you ask me ...

edited to add: ok after seeing the 98 thing maybe it's not Slash in this pic, but the story is true, and the dude does look like Slash...lol

the man's something over 6'6" ! according to a recent mag, he's using a Les Paul , custom modified for his frame (instead of a 3/4 size instrument, think 1 & 2/3 or so...)
his musical style isn't exactly to my liking, but there's no denying his skill, and the schtick cracks me up !
