Box of Rain, Grateful Dead ???

I got a GD greatest hits cd the other day, we're thinking of adding some to our repetiore. So i'm listening to Box of Rain and it sounds like some B Bending going on, anyone know who's doing it Weir or Garcia? What model are they playing? I know it is better suited for the B Bending forum, but I figured i'd get more looks from Dead Heads here....later

The Dead were great... and that's a cool song... check here for some info: http://www.dozin.com/... They used a bunch of different guitars over the years.

Jerry did play a strat for a spell in the early 70's... Jerry's rig:
Mu-tron III
Mu-tron Octive Divider
MXR Phase 100
MXR Analog Delay
MXR Distortion +
Fender Twin Silverface "Primary"
Fender Twin Blackface "Backup"

I've see pix of Bob with a Tele but I sure don't know if it's got the b-bender thing going on.

David Nelson - N.R.P.S

That's old David Nelson B-bending on a Telecaster on that one. He was a cohort of Jerry's from way back.

Interstingly I read that David was called to do the session and he had never even heard the tune, he was reading a chord chart and bending away! Not bad, not bad at all Dave.

Lot's of great stuff on the old New Riders records too. Seek them out, you'll thank me.

Also the David Nelson Band is quite good.

Best regards,
Fret

Thanks!!!

I had a semi hippy aunt and I remember her having an NRPS album. So he does some string bending on there? I really dig b bending, and I'm finding a lot of bands use it they may not be considered country to some. I'll definatley check it out

Saw the Dead a bunch from '67 to the mid- 70s. At one pint, the NRPS (with Garcia on pedal steel) opened the show, followed by an acoustic set and then the electric set. Garcia was on stage the entire show which could start at midnight (2nd show at the Fillmore East) and go to the wee hours of the morn.
Funny thing though, after Pig Pen's death I never really liked them all that much.

A great tune

with the aforementioned David Nelson on B-bender.

I love the melody and lyrics of this song...sun and showers, wind and rain, in and out your window, like a moth before a flaaaame..(or something like that.)

Believe it if you need it , if you don't just pass it on...

I could be wrong but I think I read in Phil Lesh's book, that he wrote the tune somewhere about the time his father died...

Correctomondo Chip. Rober Hunter wrote the lyric to Lesh's music and indeed wrote it with Phil's dieing Dad in mind.

"Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there".

Phil talks about this very subject in the DVD..."Classic Albums: Anthem to Beauty". Exceptional interviews with
all the Dead disecting their growth in the studio from Anthem Of The Sun through American Beauty. Highly recommended!
