How many other lovers of traditional country music are here?

I heard some little Jimmy Dickens with Hank Garland on guitar that knocked me out a few months ago.

I like Buck, early Merle, just about anything in the 60's. I haven't quite jumped into the 50's yet...but it won't be long.

To me, traditional country is all there is. It gives me a really warm, comfortable, familiar feeling to listen to Webb Pierce, Marty Robbins, Lefty Frizzell, Ferlin Husky, Kitty Wells, and all of those other greats.

Don't get me started on the vapid mush that passes for country music today. (Frankly, with a handful of exceptions, contemporary country music is little more than a retread of really, REALLY bad 1990s rock.)

Most of his career he played a Martin 000-45 that was built for him with his name inlaid on the fingerboard. His widow gave the guitar to Earnest Tubb when he was a Jimmie Rodgers impersonator.

Jimmie Rodgers died to early to get the first (bigger) Martin D-45 that went to Gene Autry in '33, just a few months after Jimmie died.

my wife, bless her heart, leans more toward the "modern" country artists...i am just the opposite....our 18 year old son is more liberal with his music tastes than me or his mother put together..!!...he listens to anything BUT rap and metal...he doesn't consider it musical at all...i have listened outside his door and heard modern country, modern rock, vintage country, Everly Bros, bubble gum doo-wop, big band; one time i was looking for my Les Paul/Mary Ford CD's to listen to on the way to a gig...they were in HIS room on the headboard..!!?

i am NOT a singer so i naturally listen to and follow the "pickers"...Brent Mason, Albert Lee, Will Ray for the more modern "bendy" stuff.....my main interest for style is Chet Atkins and Merle Travis and Joe Maphis...

as far as performing, though, i have learned the hard way an audience in this day and age will stay away by the hundreds if you don't play the modern country...i won't mention artist names, we all know who the popular ones are.....do i personally think they are good..???...probably, they are VERY good, but are they putting out the sound i like...NO...!!!...and that ONLY means they aren't doing what i like...they probably wouldn't like what i do either....we are all different

I listen to "Hanks Place" alot with my 5yo daughter. Until the yodeling starts, and then she makes me change the channel.

But I do like the older stuff, both rock & country wise.

Im lucky that our part of the UK had such a huge US AirForce prescence right up until the late 80's so growing up with that stuff in the 60's and 70's was quite normal and i still listen to that old stuff.
I have also gone a step further and got together some old friends from way back to play it again, our web site is below, it's heartening to see how many of "our age" folk come out to listen.

I love all those guys too. I also spend a lot of time listening old Western Swing. I can listen to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys all day.

the older and some of the newer country songs are my interests. I can´t say that I prefer one general direction. Like old Marty Robbins tunes, got a Bob Willis Cd a few months ago. But I also like the 70s stuff like Eagles etc. So actually for me, I go through most all eras. As a guitarero I really get into Albert Lee, Brent Mason and Pete Anderson for example, and these guys are still around.

my dad played bass and had people over every weekend to play music. i would sit in with brushes, snare & hi-hat, or acoustic. i learned to play the guitar on this old music. i also watched hee-haw religiously, and wanted to grow up to be buck owens or glen campbell......i wanted to be a front man.

I think of "Traditional Country" as more about style, feeling, instrumentation, and production values, than about a date range... I'd say that alot of records put out in the last 10-15 years still maintain a traditional country stance... Guys like Dale Watson and Redd Volkaert out in Austin, Dwight Yoakam out in California, Alan Jackson & Marty Stuart and others in Nashville come to mind...

Alot of what I think of as "Classic Country" came out in the '70s, certainly Willie and Waylon, Hank Jr., DAC, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard & George Jones goin'strong...

Give me an arrangement with a Martin acoustic, Steel, Dobro, Fiddle, and of course, lots of Telecaster, and it'll most likely put a smile on my face... :)

I don't know if this counts, but I'm a huge fan of Doc Watson. His recordings are like an encyclopaedia of various American music traditions, including early country/folk.

I like Hank Williams and early Merle Travis music too.

I love traditionnal country I listen to Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, etc every day.

I also like new country too though! Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, Dwight Yoakam, etc.

Does anyone know who's the Tele picker for Toby Keith? Is it Brent Mason? Whoever it is, he's great!
