Jodie Foster's bizarre accent in Elysium

I like Jodie Foster's performances in most movies. I think she's a great actress. However, I just saw Elysium. And I'm wondering, what is up with her beyond-awful accent in this film? She starts out speaking French (which is fine), then she switches to English and her voice just kinda globetrots and ends up sounding like she overdubbed her own performance in some amateurish, over-pronunciated dialect that pegs 100 on the Stilt-O-Meter.

It's as if she applied every vocal choice Meryl Streep ever decided against.

Is it just me, or did anyone else find it incredibly strange, like she figured this must be how people speak in the future, even though no one else around her does?

Somewhere in Cambridge, Stephen Hawking is thinking, "I now have the second most-artificial accent on the planet."

Yes, her accent bothered me as well. Not the least bit convincing. The movie by and large was greatly disappointing. When the Chicano gang pulled out the knives and started on the body surgery to Matt Damon, my plausibility meter sounded an alarm, "Leave now before this gets any worse!" Unfortunately I didn't listen and suffered through the poor plot and dialogue. Amateurish dialogue and film cutting. Never did a concept that had real potential die such a miserable death on the cutting room floor.

I have liked both Damon and Foster in pretty much all the movies I have seen them in. However, this movie was terrible. The only good part about it was that I saw it at the Drive-In.

Didn't see the movie mentioned here, but JF has always been a great actress in the movies I've seen her in...mostly psycho thrillers. I think she has that quality of being beautiful AND mysterious. Maybe she was just out of her comfort zone.

Prince John: And why should the people listen to you?

Robin Hood: Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent.

I'm soooooo glad I listened to my instincts and passed on this movie. Thank you so much for reinforcing my gut feeling about it.

Nope. English with a French accent maybe for the first scene. Then a Bizarroland accent. Very awkward to watch.

Here's a question for all you accent experts :

Did Christian Bale's utterly ridiculous vocal thing in the Batman movies (especially the one where Heath Ledger showed him how good acting can be) bother you ?

I burst out laughing in the theater when he started doing it in the first movie (completely upsetting some comicon folks ahead of us...)

Matt Demon would do a good Batman, as he did Tom Ripley.

Can these bad accents top Harrison Ford as a Russian sub commander, in Widow Maker?

Jodie Foster's accent may sound weird to us folks here in 2013, but it's probably normal for 2154. Just sayin.

Or Kevin Costner's British accent in Robin Hood? That was actually worse than Jodie Fosters French.

Matt Damon's character grows up speaking Spanish, raised by Hispanic nuns, in a Hispanic community, and has no Hispanic accent in his English. I thought that was weird.

I thought Jodie Foster was envisioning some kind of post-EU, transnational Euro-elite thing. I'm not saying it worked, but it seemed like that's what she was after. I'd imagine that after some years up there, Elysians would be starting to develop their own accent.

The movie did suck.
