Bruce Cockburn - "Speechless" is one great CD!

Santa brought me this collection of Bruce Cockburn's instumental guitar recordings from over the years.

It's fabulous!

I saw him live about 1980. It was pretty impressive musicianship...all the band.
I like to play one of his acoustic songs. Foxglove, I think it's called. It's in a strange tuning.

Great CD for sure

I've been a Cockburn fan since attending college along the NY-Canada border, and we'd see him Ottawa and Toronto.
He's just one of my favorite musicians on the planet...an excellent guitarist/fingerpicker, an incisive gutsy songwriter who's not afraid to mix it up from religious themes to the poltical to the mystical. I must confess, I have everything he's recorded...like 30 LPs/CDs, live stuff, etc.

Speechless is a delight and a great showcase for his instrumental abilities. Foxgloves is a great song, indeed, played in C tuning...from bottom to top C G C G C E.

I picked up a couple of Bruce's tab books done by the Folklore Center in Ottawa and learned that tune. It does take a fluidity and smoothless I can't duplicate but it is a really cool tuning with some great sounds/chords.

I've just checked what tuning it is and it is C. I've never thought about what notes they were, I've always just tuned that way for Foxglove and Led Zep's Bron-Y-Aur. 'This string up and those strings down...'

It's hard to get that fluidity you mention if you think about what you're doing. It's a funny sort of right hand technique that you have to just do without thinking how.[/i]
