Rockabilly and Tele Trivia

OK, you rockin cats. Who is this picker. This one is pretty esoteric but worth knowing about. I'll be back in a day or two with the answer and a link to his "hit"

Is it Bob Kelly, the guy who wrote "Git It" for Gene Vincent?

Could it be the one and only "Cornbread Skrotnik"? His big hit in 57 was "I Only Have Eyes For You........But Look What I Have For Your Sister"........

I don't know who, but look at all that fretboard wear - on a guitar that is only a few years old at best!

You see that on quite a few pictures from the 1950s and I've wondered about it too.
Did people have sandpaper skin on their fingers?
Did they spend 10 hours a day shredding in their bedrooms?

I have no idea who he is either, BTW.

Strings?

Maybe it was those dime-store Black Diamond strings that wore through the lacquer a little faster?
Or maybe the gentleman played his Tele a lot.

Too young to be Paul Burlison on that year.
He looks like Scotty but again too young for that year.

I'll go with James Burton.

That Tele (or Esquire) could only be 2-3 years old
with the white pickguard.

JB

I think Geo got it. James Burton played on Dale Hawkins' Suzie Q. in 1957 when he was 15. I can't find any early pics of him but that one looks like it could have been him.

Could that be Ray ("Tell Laura I Love Her") Peterson?

My immediate thought was Lyle Lovett . . . the nose . . . the hair . . . but that would make him much older looking today!

There is a sorta recent pic of JB.

The reason those old original Fenders wore so easy on the fretboard is thats when they used all nitro not the poly undercoated stuff like they use today.

I still think it could be Ray Peterson. Take a close look at this early pic of Ray: http://www.vocalhalloffame.com/Ray%20Peterson.jpg

Narvel Felts is getting closer. I warned you all this one was kind of esoteric. I expected Mandy to peg this one in a second.

Anyway, the fellow in the picture is Rusty York, who's hit was called Sugaree. Read about Rusty here:
http://www.rockabillyhall.com/RustyYork1.html

Hear Rusty's "hit" here. Pretty primal, rockin' stuff:
http://heartbeatsband.com/illicit/RustyYork_Sugaree.mp3

Let me know what you think.

I definitely remember that song! I couldn't have told you who did it and wouldn't have known what he looked like. But even if it wasn't a big hit nationally, it did get a good bit of airplay in Houston at the time.
