I think I'm almost done with selling on Ebay.

I sold off an amp over the weekend on Ebay to a seller with great feedback and a confirmed PayPal account. Payment was made shortly after the close of the auction but with all the scams and account hijackings, it's just making me uneasy to sell big ticket items there. Maybe it's just me or maybe I'm just being paranoid but I've heard too many horror stories lately. I'll still buy and sell small items...pedals and such, but I think I'll seek local sources when selling high-end stuff.

It's getting tougher to get a decent deal. I just got burned by a seller over a printer that doesn't work. He offered to take it back, but I have to ship it and he takes off the "final value fee" whatever that it. It won't be worth it.

Is it within eBay's rules for the seller to deduct any fees on a return like that? The final value fee is the commission that eBay charges for an auction. All the other auction costs are fixed costs charged to every auction.

I have a friend who set up a checking account solely for internet transactions. She only keeps enough in it to cover a transaction, and empties the account immediately afterwards. That way if someone tries to dispute a charge and Paypal tries to take it out of her account, they won't get anywhere.

It's truly unfortunate that good things have to go this way.

For every 1 honest person there is out there simply trying to use this service - there's about 1000 people trying to figure out how to abuse, scam, deceive, hack, ripoff other users to make the almighty $$.

There seems to be a large number of people recently who I've spoken with who share your sentiments. I've also quit doing e-bay for this reason, as well as the way Paypal has made it difficult now as a result of the above scammers and hackers.

There's still lots of honest - good willed people trying to do business on eBay, but it's getting harder daily with a seemingly endless barrage of scammers, abusers and hackers that is increasing at a crazy rate.

I partly fault e-Bay themselves for not taking a firm and harsh stance on many issues that could have led to a more secure and trusted system. I think that if things are allowed to continue at this rate, they will fall victim to their stand-back approach and will implode.

Well, that's just one person's opinion. (mine) ;)

Cheers,

Shawn

I'm not done with Ebay, but I'm done with Paypal.
If it's not a US Postal Money order, I don't even want to talk.

If there was a law, proposing the caning of all internet scammers, I'd definitely vote for it. hahahaha

What I'm tired of is the spam from scammers that shows up in my Email. All these nigerians posing as UK gear dealers, trying to broker a check fraud. I'll be honest, I've made it a fun hobby of responding to them with the most vile and insulting Emails a person could even think of.
I tear them down with the most heart stabbing insults a person could type! hahaha It's actually kinda fun, knowing they're reading it.

I think the slams against eBay are more often that not inflated expectations of what eBay should be. It's not a store; it's not the local flea market; it's not even your local newspaper's classifieds. It's a largely anonymous auction site. Act accordingly.

In over 100 transactions, buying and selling, I've had 3 "bad" experiences -- one my credit card covered, one I negotiated a middle ground with the seller, and one I "ate." But in each case, I knew that it was a higher than normal risk transaction and was prepared for the outcome and went forward because I was getting a great "deal."

Simple rules:

1) you get what you pay for;
2) if sounds too good to be true, it probably is;
3) communicate, communicate, communicate. That means asking questions BEFORE you bid. If you're selling, describe EVERYTHING and use real photos (not company stock photos).

In general, I've had more bad experiences with local stores than I've had with eBay.

I've been lucky twice.

I have sold an old Gibson Dove and recently bought a Taylor 12 string. I received an internation money order for the sale and I used visa for my purchase. Everyone involved was completely satisfied with the transactions.

In both cases I spoke to the guy on the phone. I just don't trust email conversations and I get a better feel for the person I'm dealing with when I can hear his voice and long distance rates are cheap.
