Where did Keef's nickname come from?

I love to call him Keef but why is it that we call him that? Where did this originate?

I think his aunt started calling/writing Keef or sometihng. It's in his book Life but I don't remember for sure. He signed himself "Keef" on letters when he was young.

I think I read in his autobiography that it was a family nickname for him, but it's likely that a lot of people would have said "Keef" instead of "Keith" in Dartford, where he lived, anyway. "Oi, Keef, whatcha fink yer doin'?" "I ain't doin' nuffink".

Ya...it's an affectionate local accent thing. And there'd be a bit of a 'working class' aspect to it as well.

Something like blue collar workers in New Jersey or Philadelphia.

According to his book Life, it first appeared in a letter to his Aunt Patty, "Love from Keef X". He said he was known as Cousin Beef by his extended family & that it turned into Keef.

From Wikipedia:

Sutherland was born in London, England, the son of Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, both of whom are successful Canadian actors.[2] Of primarily Scottish descent, he also has English and German ancestry.[citation needed] His maternal grandfather was Scottish-born Canadian politician and former Premier of Saskatchewan Tommy Douglas, who is widely credited for bringing universal health care to Canada.

He is named after American-born director and writer Warren Kiefer, who, under the assumed name of Lorenzo Sabatini,[3] directed Donald Sutherland in his very first feature film, the Italian low-budget horror film Il castello dei morti vivi (Castle of the Living Dead).[4][5]

1) Keef is not cockney but from Dartford in Kent, not even London ;)

2) Local southern (suvvern) accent would pronounce Keith as 'Keef', it's the way he says his own name.

A man of Kent sits and thinks but a Kentish man just sits.

I always thinks of Rodin's "Thinker" which might be more aptly named "man on the loo"
