Campilongo&cats, mixed funny????

Hey
I just picked up the Jim Campilongo and his ten gallon cats- cd.
I have heard a lot of Campilongo, especially on this forum, and I just had to find out what the buzz is about.
The music was marvellous, as was Jim´s playing. BUT!! The CD was mixed very strangely. Guitar way up, drums hardly audible, and as much as I like a Tele played in bridge position the sound cut through my ears like a knife sometimes.
So, is it me? Or is this record mixed somewhat funnily? Are his other records mixed differently? I really loved his playing but the mix spoiled it for me. Help!!!

And if it is just my ears, sorry for any fans whom I might have offended.

Peace, love and all that happiness stuff
Televiking

I have two Campilongo and Cats CDs- Loose and Heavy.

They are both mixed guitar-heavy, which is right for what is being played. I don't hear it as you describe, have you tried it on multiple CD players/sound systems?

But speaking of Jim Campilongo ... anyone got a copy of Loose they wanna sell me? I own a good pile or JC's CDs and like them all a lot, but seems like Loose is out of print. I'd love to have a copy of this for my listening pleasure.

cheers,

kevin

I think the sound on the Campilongo albums has gotten better by each album. So American Hips has the best sound IMO... before the new album comes out that is. :D But I am biased, I like his stuff, so I haven't thought about mix or anything. The first time I heard his music was live in concert in 2003, and I could only hear the guitars and drums, but the standup bass certainly looked cool. :D For extra clips of his stuff you can go to his site: http://www.jimcampilongo.com/music/mp3s.php

I bought my copy of Loose from a Dutch TDPRI regular (via the ebay). Hope you get lucky too. The live one I haven't got, it's nowhere to be found. (I do have a live bootleg of his, but I absolutely will not copy it to anybody.)

All of Jim Campilongo's albums, including Loose and Live at Du Nord are available on ITunes. They should also be available at other sites that sell music, like Napster. It's a drag to not have the original artwork, but I was dying to own the live album and $9.99 is not a bad price.

I'm going to be in NYC next week and am planning to see Jim play. Anyone else making the trip?

Yeah, I really like his music.
And, surprise surprise when I listened to the record on another soundsystem everything was ok. So my stereo eats drums???
Anyway, thanx for feedback & info.

Weelie, let's grab a beer someday together?

Stereo eats drums? Maybe. Check your EQ.

I think that all of Jims albums are little production marvels. I've always loved all the guitar tones, and especially the drum sounds.

Jim once had his engineer post here all of the info regarding the recording technique. Jim insists on 2" analog tape, and a Neve console. There's a SERIOUS tone recipe right there!

I can't wait to hear what ol' Jim has up his sleeve next for us!

Do I remember right that he was going to try a 'live' studio album? A one-sitting deal? Wouldn't that be amazing.

There are plenty of players that compare favorably with Campilongo technically, maybe, but I can't think of ANYONE else playing guitar in any similar genre whose total package is so unique. I mean, I can hear 5 or 6 notes and know it's Campilongo. His compositions and tone, together, are wildly original.

I admire his stuff greatly.

Oh isn't THAT the truth?!? My 8 year old daughter can identify Jim's playing in less than 3 notes! She even knows the song titles - and I don't know them at all, except for a few. Her favorite is "Cat Under a Car".

Jim's a really nice guy, and I told him how my daughter really enjoys his stuff. He sent her an email. She was just GIDDY about it! Like he's a Beatle or something!
