Can't open ".wmv" Videos

While this problem has nothing to do with the TDPRI, I'm hoping its O.K. to post my question here and hopefully get a reply.....

Whenever I go to open a link to a video that ends with ".wmv", Photoshop opens up as a default. Any guesses as to why?

Thanks, Paul

Ya the fix is simple you have photoshop associated with wmv. downlaod a wmv file to your desktop right mouse click on it go to properties see where it says opens with change that from photoshop to windowss media player.

If you can open the windows media player go to tools options and file types then just click the box that says wmv.

I moved this to the Bad Dog Cafe because the Forum Problems and Questions forum is just for problems with the TDPRI forum specifically, not other problems.

Thanks
Paul

You'll need Windows Media Player or an alternate (I like VLC) installed to actually play the file.

You can buy about any USB 2 button mouse and the right click will work on your Mac.

In your case, hold the Ctrl key then one click on the file icon to bring up the contextual menu with options. Choose Get Info (instead of properties on PC).

-or-
Use the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. Click File then from the drop down menu choose Get Info.

-or easiest-
Just just press the Command (Apple) key and press the letter I at the same time. The Info window will appear.

About half way down the window you should see Open with:, then you can choose from the pop-up which program will open the file, and click the change all button to make it work with all files of the same type (wmv).

You might want to do some maintenence tasks on the Mac as well like rebuilding the permissions (if you are on OSX). When file associations start to get messed up it's usually a sign that it's time for that.

Here is a free utility that runs a bunch of scripts for stuff like rebuilding permissions. I usually run them all at least once a month. There are a bunch of these apps, but this one is as good as any and is free.

VLC does have problems with some Windows Media files so unforunatly you usually need a copy of Windows Media Player on your Mac. Curse damn Windows Media!
