Office Managers

My office manager is a little crazy.

One of her responsibilities is restocking the break room. This morning, she went to restock the fridge with half & half only to find that there was already a generous supply. Consequently, she walked around, seemingly in shock, asking each of us if we were aware that there was half & half in the fridge.

When she came around to me, I replied with an honest “no” because I tend to drink my coffee black.

She then said: “You're part of the problem." Gosh, she's a peach.

In my experiences, office managers can sometimes tend to be a little power-trippy and may over inflate their self-worth and/or their worth to the company/organization.

Most times, they are so easily replaced it would make their head spin.

she may have a dry sense of humor.

because you drink your coffee black, you ARE part of the problem of too much half and half!

Those folks and purchasing and accounts payable... god bless those people... those jobs would SUCK!

I also admire maintenance people...

these people do the jobs that I need done (and done right) and don't the skills or interest to do... the world needs the finger waggers and gate keepers...

put some cream in your coffee just for her... this is a problem that will bug her all day (thank god!)

I think the next time she's in the break room, I'll open the fridge, take out the carton of half & half, and motion as if I'm going to drink it straight from the carton.

If you work in the government the rational solution would have been to pour half and half down the drain until the appropriate amount remains.

EDIT: As jondanger points out this does kind of lead towards "political discussion," so I apologize for posting it.

But more importantly it's not super hilarious or witty or anything. My comment was pretty pointless.

(BTW I am an office manager at a small company.)

I don't use half'n'half because I'm lactose intolerant. I suppose I could switch which problem I'm part of.

Tell her to contact HR to see if anyone is missing? Especially known half & half drinkers.

Yes, I have had plenty of power-hungry office managers be-little me. I think it's the title "manager" that makes them think they are somehow exalted. Maybe there should be a law that changes their title to OFFICE SPOKESPERSON.

Now go get me some coffee, office spokesperson.

Skinny shorts, black socks and pointy guitars played through modeling amps? Sounds like Postal Employees to me.

Now who's gonna make fun of overweight screenprinter/guitar builders? I can take it.

Well there you have. Whether you accept that or not YOU are the problem, LOL. Maybe you should just stop pi$$ing her off.

Nastiness seems to be a prerequisite for office managers of crazy-busy companies, particulary an office with heavy traffic from great salespeople and strong department managers. She is usually the first line of defense for the GM. From what I've seen, office managers fearing delegation of responsibility seems to be the real challenge for GMs. It's something about that OM position; with a heavier does of control than responsibility attracting those with more work ethic than wisdom. How's that for a sweeping generalization? In my experience the young ones are the worst, and they are particularly tough on newbs. My current office manager has mellowed into early middle-age and, while she remains loath to delegate anything she thinks I deem important, she gets along with everyone else a lot better than when she first came on board. If she ever purchased creamer or half-and-half I would fall over. That woman controls every penny.
