Mozart is the undisputed master, but my personal favorite is J.S. Bach. Technically though, he is Baroque.

I love classical music. My favorite is J.S. Bach. Favorite albums are The French Suites performed by Glenn Gould. I also like The Brandenburg Concertos by the Academy of Ancient Music with Christopher Hogwood.
Mostly I like the Baroque period and the Classical period. I don't like the Romantic period much. Mendelssohn, Brahms, Liszt, just don't do it for me. Here's a link to a local radio station. They've put little snippets of pieces on their website so you can check them out. It's a good way to find pieces you like and find out what their names are. Essential Classics I recommend: Bach The Brandenburg Concertos The French Suites (with Glenn Gould. Actually, any recording with Glenn Gould is a masterpiece) Beethoven Symphony #9, "Choral" Vivaldi - The Four Seasons Mozart Eine Kleine Nachtmusik The Magic Flute The Marriage of Figaro Symphony #41, "Jupiter" Hayden - Symphony #104, "London" Handel - Water Music These are pieces that most people have heard snippets of, but they're really worth hearing in their entirety. For me it's like reading a great book, or seeing a real good classic movie. Also, for the older stuff I prefer recordings on period instruments. Not as bright or as harsh sounding as when it's played on modern instruments. Just my opinion. Good luck!

Wilhelm van Wassenaer, check out his six concertos. I love them. He wasn't even a composer he was a Diplomat or something and tried to remain anonymous (and did till quite recently).

I subscribed to a classical magazine for a while. Every month they would send a sampler CD. That was a good way to get familier with various composers. I also ahve some classical music for guitar, Lute, etc that is wonderful. |

I love Antonin Dvorak
The New World Symphony is my FAVORITE CLASSICAL PIECE EVER!
Interesting history behind it, as well. Dvorak was very into Negro spirituals. As I remember it, the first movement of the New World Sympony, (and maybe the 2nd and 3rd, I can't remember) was actually an attempt to write an Opera based on "Hiawatha". Think about the French Horn riff... Anyway, Classical music is a favorite of mine, for sure. And, a favorite of my musical hero, Kerry Livgren. I have always loved Prog and it's bent toward the classical side of things. Kansas is the greatest American Prog band EVER!

My favorite piece is Barber's Adagio in G, but I've been listening to early choral music, the Tallis Scholars in particular, lately.
--Dono: I have always liked Livgren as well. I really liked his work with A.D. on the Art of the State album. Take care, Rob |
