But on a serious note, that is sad, especially since its been a part of Olympic tradition for such a long time.

I am sick of a society that throws tradition aside. Wrestling represents the tradition of the ancient Greek games. It's the ultimate contest, and links us to the past. If you take away the spirit and tradition of the Olympic Games, why bother even having them? Modern society is not nearly as evolved and enlightened as it pretends to be. They are just a bunch of effete posers. It's disgusting.

Actually, the Olympics should seriously rethink themselves, who actually does javelin throwing as a hobby? Give me some skateboarding, extreme hopscotch ,rollerblading, stuff that people do, or can do, it would promote the get off the couch and do something attitude by showing stuff people can actually do |

Okay, so some folks are getting a little hysterical here, on both sides, but seriously, wrestling is an awesome Olympic sport. Besides the link with tradition, which is certainly important and a big part of the meaning of the Olympics (as I'm sure the IOC would be quick to agree), there's a purity to it that can't be denied. Two people and a circle. It's pretty hard to get closer to the heart of sporting competition. I'm not slamming any other sports, and I'll leave it to others to debate what event to eliminate instead, but wrestling, like the marathon, really ought to be sacrosanct in the Olympics.

Hmm.
I believe the Olympic Tradition does not mean throwing out the old for the new...like introducing hooverboards and dumping everything, including skiing(which was not an olympic sport)....it means embracing both.......old and new...

That's gotta be one of the stupidest decisions they've ever made, and I don't even like wrestling.
I used to fence, so I am familiar with how the IOC jerks the smaller sports around. Fencing is always in fear of being dropped and because of that they are constantly screwing with the rules to make it more television friendly. I would never have dreamed wrestling would be a victim. I don't know about the rest of the world, but the popularity of wrestling in US high schools and colleges, I would think this has a good chance of getting turned back around. Afterall, it is the US TV ratings that the IOC is after. |
