Autograph Opinion

Ok a hypothetical question:

Assuming you had a very valuable (sentimentally and monetarily) guitar that is your number one player, and could choose to have one of your favorite artists to sign it, would you?

I'm considering having someone I consider great to have him scratch his name into a guitar that fits the description above.

Not me! I have always been the type that will not even put stickers on anything of any value. I wouldn't deface a nice guitar with my own name; I sure as @#$ won't put the name someone other than myself on it!

I just know a lot of great and humble artists that have done the same thing on their valuable guitars.

I dont really care for people signing things but this artist is someone I truly consider Great. I think it will make the guitar a lot more special to me and make me love it even more. I see guitars as tools and not jewelries to collect. The thing is it's pretty valuable and I will possibly be defacing it in the eyes of others but then again I will never sell it.

Again the guitar is very valuable/collectible/sought-after and original. So that's my concern contrary to the fact that I view guitars as tools.

Mine's no where near this but let's just say you had a vintage pre '70 vintage tele that's all original and it is your number one. Meaning you don't care to baby it and you treat like a non abused tool. Would you get it signed by someone that you have the utmost respect/reverence for?

So I guess preserving it for what is is my concern.

But I think I'm going to do it. The gold leaf pen would look fantastic on the guitar but I want something a little more permanent

If I had an opportunity to have Yngwie Malmsteen autograph my strat or Joe Bonamassa autograph my LP, you better believe I would jump all over it. I would not have BB King sign a Strat...

I doubt whether Tommy's signature will add any value to the guitar, since he has signed thousands of guitars over the years. In fact, if it really is a rare, original, collectible vintage guitar his signature may devalue it, as it will immediately reduce the pool of potential buyers.

Personally, as much as I love Tommy, I don't want his signature on my guitar but each to his own.

BTW A friend of mine has a 1958 Gibson ES295 signed by Scotty Moore on the back of the headstock and given Scotty's association with the 295 his signature may have added value to it.

I'm only 25 and I already regret stuff that I did at the age of 16...I can only imagine the list will grow. I say have him sign something else.

A signed photograph that you can frame would be a better option imho

Or a signed (non-original) pickguard that you can add or remove as desired...

or, even better, both! then put them in the same shadow-box frame with a note from Tommy saying how much you rock!

Absolutely not. And if my guitar had been signed, I'd wipe the signature off as quickly as possible. I don't care who it is. It could be Elvis.

I have had things signed. I take the trem cover off and carry it easily in my back pocket. I get it signed, I put it back on the guitar. In about a year, it wears off. The second time I saw John Petrucci was in Boston and I already had his sig on a cover so I didn't bother. After the session, I got to go to dinner with him. :) I still didn't ask for a sig.

I would never let anyone autograph one of my guitars I just never understood why someone would want a name sharpied across their guitar. It's one thing to get an autograph on a poster or picture. If I was looking at buying a guitar with an autograph I would have to consider the work or cost to have it removed.
