Latest GP issue, Yngwie interview...

I laughed out loud when I saw him on the cover. I thought, "Man, this should be a hoot!". I have never been a fan of his music, although I do respect his prowess on the instrument, and the amount of work he puts into it. I thought the interview would be great entertainment, more of his raving about how he's the best, everyone else stinks, violin this, classical that, me me me, etc. I was quite surprised, but the interview was actually very enjoyable. He seems to have grown up quite a bit. He's even gotten comfortable with the fact that he's not as perfect as he'd like to be. He's come to have a sense of humor about what he does and who he is as well. As a testament to this, he's named his new album "Unleash The Fury", a humorous referrance to his '88 air rage incident. I would highly recommend reading the piece, it's a great insight into a guy who basically spawned a whole musical movement. I enjoyed it. I still won't buy his records, (not my style, just don't dig it.) But I can respect him now instead of busting a gut every time I hear his name.

i have a hard time listening to him play, but i do how like he's grown up a bit. he still plays ridiculously loud (in an interview he said he will cram as many stacks in as the venue will allow), but he's gone to strictly non-master volume heads. i think it's helped his tone a bit (JMO).

i also personally appreciate how he showed the world that you can tear it up on a Fender (we're talking rock music here) during a time when guys were using primarily Jacksons outfitted with super-flat fretboards with 24 frets, locking trems, and super-high-output humbuckers. i know his Strats are far from stock, but they still hold the essence of what makes a Fender a Fender.

like him or not, he did certainly change the guitar world back in the early 80's. it's good to know he's starting to become a bit more seasoned - maybe it will influence (or should i say expand) his playing style as well.

just as a postscript - i saw G3 in Denver on DVD for kicks - IMO he blew away both Vai and Satriani. all 3 guitarists styles sound a bit 'canned' to me (especially their songs), but Malmsteen the least so. actually the DVD was pretty humerous - just came off as some very self-indulgent guitar playing.

I too respect the guy, but also have no desire to listen to him play. I especially respect him for being able to shred on that bizarre scalloped fretboard. They had one of his signature Strats at the GC by me a few years ago and I played it just for fun. I don't know how the heck he blazes on that thing. I felt completely helpless on it (not that I can shred on any other fretboard LOL).

I have an Guitar Player interview from years ago where Yngwie is interviewed alongside John McLaughlin, and it's one of the best interview reads ever! Yngwie is a complete a**, and you can feel the "who the heck IS this guy..." vibe from McLaughlin just jump off the pages.

A drummer buddy of mine opened for Yngwie at a festival in Europe this past summer. He met him and said the guy's a totally nice regular guy! Humble and really cool. Apparently he's recently become sober and he's mellowed down considerably. He apparently said he was nervous about playing the festival they were at because it was the first time he's ever played in that country sober. Good for him!

The Malmsteen piece was okay, but overall I think GP's quality is slipping this year. Last month, they gave us the Great Kat and her insane spewage, along with adds for footwear and liquor. Makes me glad that I read Vintage Guitar too.

I am quitting all the other mags because they have the same interviews they just rotate the months----I am keeping Vintage Guitar and thats it.------cheers----Jimo

it was kinda funny doing all the kicks at the audience trying to keep his gut sucked in ....man i miss the 80's
