What are your Johnny Winter favorites?
I've always respected Johnny Winter but now I am looking into the finding some of his best performances. When I was growing up, Johnny Winter And "Live" was a big one. Of course I got a little off track from Johnny with Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer getting lots of notice too. The songs Frankenstein and Rock & Roll Hoochie Coo kind of pushed Johnny into the background and I never got a chance to really absorb Johnny's playing. Some say his early performances are his best. What do you think?

Progressive Blues Experement, Johnny Winter And, Second Winter, Still Alive and Well are but a few of great, classic Johnny recordings.
I was a HUGE fan back in the day and Johnny helped shaped my playing style. I had not listened to Johnny in years when a buddy sent me the above CD's. I usually don't dwell in the past, and it's hard for me to listen to this on a regular basis, but it was fun to go back and listen to what a great guitar player he was. Second Winter still ranks up there ( for me anyway ) as one of the all time great albums of that era. |

All of the above, plus Third Degree, Guitar Slinger, Seruous Business and The Winter of '88.
Winter's production and playing on Muddy Waters' Hard Again also shines.

I've always thought it was interesting that johnny is one of the best slide players out there, and yet in multible interviews he's complained that playing slide is boring to him

I always liked his earlier stuff on Columbia. Thought he went kind of haywire around the "Saints & Sinners" era. One record that holds up pretty good from the late '70s is "White, Hot & Blue"- don't know if it's released on CD. "Nothing But the Blues" is pretty good too. I think one of his best later efforts is "Hey, Where's Your Brother?"
The Alligator releases sound a little harsh to me, but still show his great chops.

His first (self-titled) Columbia album and the Johnny Winter And studio album are my favorites.
However, I'm old enough to have seen him at the Love Street Light Circus & Feelgood Machine at Allen's Landing (Houston) way back in the day. I was very young. My mother must have taken me...yeah, that's the ticket. |

I'll second "Hey, Where's Your Brother?" It's always been one of my favorites. I've never heard "White Hot & Blue", or "Saint & Sinners", but I've heard almost everything else. I can't really think of any of them that I didn't really care for, except the studio album of the Johnny Winter And group. A great one that never gets mentioned is "Raisin' Cain", which was his last Blue Sky album before signing with Alligator. That was a real good one.

I've liked they man as soon as I heard "Johnny Winter", but I didn't follow him after the 70s. "Goin' back to Dallas, Gonna take my razor and my gun, Lot of S__t in Dallas, Oh Lord gonna step in some." If that ain't the blues then I don't know what is. Bonneville Bruce |
