Recommend a Thumbs Carlisle CD

A friend gave me a cd with an excerpt from the Thumbs Carlisle Road (radio) Show, I liked it quite a bit but was unable to find any Thumbs Carlisle cds on Amazon or the like.

I know Thumbs Carlisle played with Roger Miller, but there apear to be quite a few Roger Miller albums to choose from.

Any recommendations for Thumbs Carlisle cd's or disc where Thumbs' playing is featured would be much appreciated.

Thanks for any info,
Mike

www.thumbscarllile.com -Note spelling.

I don't have any of these but did see him once with Roger Miller - on the Jimmy Dean show!

Thanks for the help Detroit Dave, the spelling certainly makes all the difference.

I followed the link and picked up the disc entitled "Thumbs Carllile On His Own."

Thanks again,
Mike

I've always been amazed that Thumbs isn't as widely known as he should be. What an incredible musician!

i have the lp of "on his own". i remember the first time i put in on, i was pretty disappointed with the song selection and "easy listening" style until i got to "mystery train". that was what i was hoping for.
i have an old compilation lp called "tennessee guitar" that has thumbs doing a song called "springfield guitar social", where he imitates all the guitarists of the day(50's-les paul, chet atkins, grady martin hank garland, jimmy bryant, speedy west, etc.). it's one of the most amazing pieces of guitar playing ever recorded.

Oh yes, "Springfield Guitar Social" is a gem! Phil Baugh did a similar piece, but not as cute (or well played).
I have a couple of other Thumbs albums, one is "Roger Miller Presents" , and I forget the other's title. He's playing gut string and a Fender Jaguar on these, and they really are great. They're a lot more standards/swing oriented than his later funkier stuff, but excellent in their way.

Perhaps it is because he is always getting moved to the Bad Dog Cafe . . .

I had the pleasure to see Thumbs play live once. He was sitting in with The Band, and had a Telecaster in his lap. He was a very tasteful player.

Thumbs

I use to room with Thumbs in North Hollywood when I was working at the Palomino with Jimmy Snyder. He was a great person. He tuned his guitars to E-flat I believe. It was a good time back then.

Check with Herby Wallace..........

Hey Mike, check Herby Wallace's website.... He's a pedal steel player with a music store and sells on line as well. Herby was a very close friend of Thumbs and they recorded some great stuff together. Herby has it all for sale on both CD and cassette. I think he might also have some of Thumbs solo stuff...... Just do a search under his name and the website'll come up. If you haven't heard Herby play by the way, he's just about as hot as any pedal steel player in the world and a member of the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in St. Louis....JH in Va.
