I thought it was wild cherry as well
how I get that tone is not playing it with a pick , & pinching the strings & letting them slap back on the fretboard. If that makes sense. ciao. Symn

Aw...fun tune to play. I heard one ol' boy doin' it with some kinda effect that almost had his Tele soundin' like a clavinet...sorta Wild Cherry meets 70's-era Stevie Wonder. Keep on truckin'...

The last band I played in covered that song - I always had good results with popping the strings a bit and using a clean tone and a phaser (MXR Phase 90) on a slow setting. I don't think the original used that effect, but the phaser gives it a bit of an effected sound without being too over the top.

Man, I used to play that tune 6 nights a week. What's worse, the band's wardrobe of uniforms included (I kid you not) matching white leisure suits.
IIRC, I think I used to play the lick with just palm muting and picking really hard down by the bridge. But it's been a while since I listened to it. (And with any luck, it'll be even longer before I ever have to play it again... hee.) ;-) CS
