"Walk The Line" looks do be a disapointment to me
I watched the trailer today for "Walk The Line"...the upcomming movie about Johnny & June Carter Cash. It doesn't look to me like something I'd want to watch.
Jaquin Phoenix (I know, I can't spell his name) plays Cash and Reese Witherspoon plays June. From what I saw on the trailer, it just seems to be missing the spark that was Johnny Cash. Well.....say lay vee!

Movies about famous people who were alive during the media age are almost always doomed to fail. Jamie Foxx's remarkable portrayal of Ray Charles in "Ray" made that film a rare exception.

Maybe it's because I'm from the south, but it seems like a southern accent is one of the hardest to pull off. I haven't seen the trailer yet but I'm sure Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix attempt southern accents, and I hope they do better than every other actor that's tried it. Oh and Val Kilmer playing JIm Morisson is another one of the few that pulled off a biopic.

Yes, in the trailer they do show the bill in the strings. I saw the trailer when I went to see Batman Begins a couple of weeks back.
Personally, I'd have liked Mark Collie to play Johnny. Mark reminds me a lot of Johnny. Plus, I know that he has an honest love for Johnny's music. Joel

You can view the trailer here:
http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/walkthelineqt1.html I'm looking forward to the movie, but I'm not sure I'll be able to get the way Johnny sings vs. Joaquin Phoenix out of my head. I'll just try to enjoy it anyway. |

As for Southern accents, Reese Witherspoon is a local girl, so a Southern accent should be old home week for her. Quote:
[*]Robert DeNiro in Cape Fear[*]Jon Voight in Deliverance[*]Dan Aykroyd in Driving Miss Daisy[*]And dare I say it? Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind. WAAYYY too over the top. And she even won an Academy Award for that performance. A fake Southern U.S. accent is virtually always detected by a native Southerner. Non-Southerners usually exaggerate quite a bit when trying to speak with a Southern accent, when, in fact, it's the subtle qualities of the accent that really count. To me, Robert Duvall, a California native (San Diego, to be exact), can pull off one of the most authentic Southern accents around. Virtually undetectable. And our very own 0le FUZZY has the peculiarities of Southern phonetics down to an absolute science. Real backwoodsy Southern phonetics. I'm anxious to see whether Joaquin Phoenix can pull off that booming tone, let alone the Southern accent, of Johnny Cash's voice. Quote:

Well, I just saw the trailer, and I still don't know what to think of it.

teledude66--
From what I've heard, Johnny and June knew there was a movie "in the works" and they both wanted Mark to play the lead in it. Mark was one of the people I heard it from and a local DJ was the other. My girlfriend and I saw Mark in November and she even said to me "I never noticed it before but Mark really reminds me of Johnny Cash." He was almost a dead ringer for Johnny circa '64-'67. genelovesjez-- That's exactly the clip I'm talking about. My family is from the south. I've visited the south for as long as I can remember. I've lived here since 1997. I've yet to hear someone pronounce the word "sir" as "suh". It's usually "surr" or "sarr". I might know "southern" better than Jessica but, I think she looks better in the shorts than I would. Joel

I was born in Atlanta and I have lived in N. FL/S. GA for most of my life. I am surrounded by actual southern accents, so here's my take.
"Suh" for "sir" is what I think of as an aristocratic southern accent. You do hear it, but not very often. Wealthy people from old southern families do tend to still use this accent. They may even do it on purpose to set themselves apart from the normal "redneck" southern accent. "Mustud" for '"mustard", etc. Farm folk from Hazzard county would probably not use this accent. Quote:
The more distance from large cities, the stonger the accent seems to get. A lot of people in Atlanta don't sound particularly Southern, but out in the rural areas it can actually be difficult to understand what they're saying. Alabama, in particlular, is extremely..umm...dialect oriented. |

Mark did a short (approx. 20min) B & W film a while back called, I believe, "I Still Miss Someone". He portrayed Johnny. I haven't watched it but I've heard nothing but great things about it. Sorry for the hi-jack nasonm. Joel
