"the watch"

My grandfather owned a very unusual watch, you could see it run and it had no stems for adjustment.

My grandfather loved this watch, it was a prize possesion.

When my grandfather passed on many years ago. I asked my mom about his watch.

She said "your uncle has it".

Anywho, my dad had surgery for melanoma yesterday.

I took off work and went home this morning to see how he was doing.

He walked in the kitchen almost as if he had scripted it, and set "the watch" on the table.

I came to the conclussion that the fact that the watch has made it to our side of the family is because my uncle passed away this year.

My dad then took his watch off, and put "the watch" on.

Many things went through my head at that time.

I think he was making a statement.

It won't be long before you will be wearing the watch AND

"You can't change the hands of time".

He is in good spirits

But he is never going to look the same. I am hoping he takes it well.

My dad has always been blessed with physical beauty. I am hoping he can cope.

How badly is he disfigured now?

My dad went in to have what appeared to be a small squamous-cell carcinoma removed from his scalp, and by the time they were through he was missing a softball-sized circle of scalp all the way to the skull. The skin graft isn't pretty, either. He wears hats a lot now.

Is it just me, or does the watch gesture seem like a bit of an FU?

yeap

carcenoma...wasn't melanoma. He has it all over him. They have been cutting on him for years. But now it is to a point where he will be faced with looking at it everyday in the mirror. Yes it is disfiguring.

Yes, they had to take a large chunk of scalp, so he will be wearing a hat to cover the bald spots.

I think the watch gesture was merely his way of communicating that the reality that I am going be wearing it soon, and I should be prepared to make the bigger family decisions, is not far away. I think the watch represents a legacy of responsibility, and that he was saying that I don't have that responsibility quite yet, but I should prepare for the fact that it won't be long.

SPF 30+ for me now thank you. yes, I am white, thank you.
