Honky Tonk Night Time Man--By Skynyrd?

I just heard HTNTM by Lynyrd Skynyrd on Sirius and it was surprisingly good.

I expected a blues-rock solo when the time came, but instead heard a tasty, clean little run, very reminiscent of the original recording.

At one point Ronnie (or is it Donnie?) says:

"Sounds like Roy!"

Good times, good times.

WE know which Roy,don't we?

I've read in two different places where the writer commented on Skynyrd's familiarity with Hag and country music..."referring to great country guitarist Roy Clark"during the guitar solo...makes me mad evry time!WE know which Roy he meant, don't we?THAT's why I like this forum...

That's Steve Gaines doing the pickin' on the Honky Tonk Night Time Man. Gaines joined Skynyrd in '76 and re-energized the band. Even people who aren't big southern rock fans would like Street Survivors where you'll find that song. Gaines played many of styles of music including soul, funk and country and could have outplayed anyone else in Skynyrd. Steve, his sister Cassie and Ronnie Van Zant all died in the plane crash on the Street Survivors tour.

We know which Roy.............

Dang right we do! For those that don't it's the late and always great Roy Nichols of Merle Haggard's Strangers Band. Roy was a super picker from a very early age. He played with the Maddox Brothers & Rose when he was 16 or 17 and played better than most of his peers at the time. After their split, I played with Fred Maddox for a while in the sixties and had to be compared to people like Roy and also Phil Baugh who did a stint with Fred. I'm glad Fred didn't know too much about music or he'd have fired me.......... As far as Steve Gaines, he really breathed a bunch of life into the Skynyrd Band. My favorite guitar work of his is "I Know a Little"! What awesome stuff, Western Swing, Jazz, Rock, Country, is was all in that tune. So sad he had to die so young! I read a statement once that Ronnie VanZant had made where he said they had to practice more to try to be good enough to play with Steve. That says it all......JH in Va.

Yes sir...

One of the great things about Skynyrd with Steve Gaines in the band, was the different guitar sounds, all intertwining and adding to the whole... Steve's sound was clean, out of phase Strat, with a funky/bluesy feel, in contrast to the heavy Gibson sounds of Gary Rossington's Les Paul and Allen Collins' Explorer... All great stuff... I think Steve contributed to the Blues Boogie potential of the band, and gave it a kickstart on songs like "Call me the breeze", "I know a little", and "T for Texas"... I just love the Skynyrd band and all the recordings from that era...

Yeah, Steve was the man! I enjoyed Ed King's work with LS a lot, but Steve was a different guitarist and he did bring a fresh sound to the band.

FWIW, Steve was doin' the "sounds like Roy" solo, Gary Rossington does a killer dobro run and of course, we're treated to a solo spot by "Billy Powell, on the piano". Anybody else ever notice at the beginning Ronnie says something to the effect of "a little bits o' Bakersfield"?

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane, Gopher. Time to go find my "Street Survivors" CD... 8)

definatley underrated, and underappreciated by the masses, as exemplified by the snubs from the R&R HOF.... Gaines had he lived i think would have surpassed a lot of the "guitar gods"

and yeah i always catch the "bakersfield" quote
