Peavey JF-1 Exp???

In a recent thread on 335 style guitars I didn't see any mention of the Peavey JF-1 Exp. Does anyone have any idea/opinion of how this guitar ($400 US MSRP) stacks up to the others mentioned?

Gord, I recently played two Peavey JF-1's. I was very impressed with the price / perfomance ratio they offer. Musicians Friend has ( or had, not sure if they still do ) for around $299.00. If I was in the market for a 335 style guitar, this one would be high on the list.

Hey there! You may be talking about the 335 thread I started a while back. I haven't played the Peavey, but the headstock is too ugly for me!

Just so you know, I ended up getting an Aria TA-50 and I LOVE it. The nicest sounding and nicest playing of any of the 335's I tried. And they're cheap! Not much info out there about them, but it's a set-neck tobacco-burst beauty. I paid $400CDN.

Coincidentally, I stumbled on the Peavey last week on my birthday. I've had a 335-Jones for years but couldn't fit one into the budget. I've been casually keeping my eye out for an Artcore. But I saw this in the local shop and picked it up. I was impressed with the worksmanship and playability. And I was especially pleased to find that when I plugged it in, the pickups sounded great, with a respectable amount of PAF vibe. I couldn't believe it when they told me they'd sell it to me new for $275, and so it was my first "impulse" guitar purchase! I agree the headstock might be a matter of taste, but it didn't bug me too much. Here she is:

Hey Doc! No offense on the headstock dig! $275 is a smokin' deal for that much guitar. Despite what everyone says, I tried a bunch of the Artcores and just didn't fall for any of them. Nice looking and nicely built, but just...weak sounding to my ears. Have fun with your Peavey!

I'm having BIG fun, Mikey! No offense taken - actually, I have a very minor issue with the fretboard inlays - would prefer dots. No big deal at that price, though!

I looked around yesterday on my way home from having some work done on my car. One music store has the JF-1 with a hard/soft case for $350 CDN and another offered me an Oscar Schmidt OE30 for $400 (and he'd throw in a gig bag for an extra $20). I think the Epiphone Dots were more like $500 at the third store. The Peavey is very tempting!

Gord, try to plug them all in to the same amp, if you can. Let the electronics help you decide. At that price range, the pickups are often a weak link. I've played one or two of the Schmidts, and they're pretty impressive, but the Peavey felt a little better, and sounded a little better unplugged. I never did plug in the Schmidt.
