here are my favorites.
"Till there was you" (the live version from anthology1) The Beatles. George Harrison was an avid fan of Chet Atkins and in this solo played on his Gretsch Country gent he shows it off. "Sharp dressed man" - ZZ Top One big simple slide solo but so much attitude. "Love 'em and Leave 'em" - Kiss Ace Frehley isn't really known for virtuosity but in this track he nailed it. "Estranged" - Guns N Roses It's debatable but in my opinion Slash's finest moment. "When it's love" - Van Halen This one is unusual for EVH, he didn't play a very ornate solo. He took a step back and played what was needed. "Killer Queen"- Queen Brian May acting like the magician he is, he makes notes appear from out of nowhere and ends up with a whole choir and it's the most subtile use of a Wah pedal I ever heard. "Hollywood Nocturne" - The Brain Setzer Orchestra Setzer really captures that 1920's vibe of a vintage gangster movie with this one, you can smell the gunsmoke and feel the raindrops coming down. "Five years, four months, three days" - Brian Setzer The best bad attitude baritone solo I ever heard, played on a Danelectro with just the amount of growl from his Fender bassman amp to give me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

that solo kicks major boo-tay. It's important to listen to the ALBUM version, not the crappy AM-radio edited version. A great "song within a song."

late 60's by Grand Funk Railroad (Mark, Don, and Mel?) I belive "In Need" is the tune.
I'm sittin' here lonley like a broken man, spend my time doin' the best I can, walls and bars they're surrounding me, but I don't want no sympathy. Can some one help me out here? For me to retain that much of the song is a miracle in itself, but it was a fantastic guitar solo. I belive the album cover was green. I'd like to purchase the CD but want to make sure it's the right one. Ohh, and who can argue Trowler "Bridge of Sighs". Makes my skin crawl still...awesome. And Jeff Beck "Freeway Jam". |

Lotsa great ones for sure...
a couple of my favorites: YMMV
1. Steve Wariner on Midnight Fire...I love that...mucho 2. Another vote for Toy Caldwell's "Can't You See". 3. Reggie Young on "That's the Way Love Goes". Plus several of the ones you guys have already mentioned, Beck, Clapton, etc. Also I really like this thread because it's reminded me of some songs I haven't heard in a while, and introduced me to some I haven't listened to....so I will! |

Another vote for Robbie Krieger's 'Light My Fire': Fingerpicked SGs never sounded so good!
Keeping it tele, I've been marvelling at the daredevil solo in Zep's 'Communication Breakdown'. Jimmy Page sloppy? Where?

cliche alert
i can't believe nobody mentioned Page's scorching ride on "Stairway to Heaven" ... yeah, it's old-hat Guitar 101 stuff now but when it came out i almost flipped my wig.
Also: Bloomfield on the Electric Flag's "Killin' Floor" and Albert Lee on Emmylou's "Two More Bottles of Wine."

Clapton/Yardbirds - I Ain't Got You. You can see where Page got the Whole Lotta Love solo, but this is shorter, tighter, treblier and 5 years earlier.
Billy Gibbons/ZZ Top - La Grange. I like the way he plays the same note at least 400 different ways. Pete Shelley/The Buzzcocks - Boredom. I like the way he plays the same two notes at least one different way. J Mascis/Dinosaur Jr. - In a Jar. It's sloppy and aimless, but I like. Honorable Mention: Dickey Betts/Allmans - Blue Sky. Anything by Neil Young, Angus Young or Tom Verlaine.
